Choji loses his freedom of character and power that most male naruto characters get automatically because hes fat, so instead of getting character development and power that are his own the bits of character development that he gets relate largely to other male characters (shikamaru) or are about his fatness, much like how female characters in naruto almost always have arcs about other male characters or about their female-ness. He and Ino are lumped together into comic relief more often than not, he doesnt really get cool moments where he wins battles. He does maybe get more personal intrigue about himself and his life than Ino does, since her backstory is all about her and Sakura beefing over Sasuke, but I do think that Choji often ends up in a similar place to many female characters in Naruto because of his fatness. He loses much of the gender privileges that the other male characters get because he is fat.
Also during asumas death scene in the anime Asuma (who is literally dying) is just like "Choji... you should lose weight...." And thats like all he says the Choji WHICH IS CRAZY. Naruto is so close to honestly having a good perspective on fatness with how Choji being not skinny makes him stronger and Shikamaru being like "your body is fine how it is, people should love you for who you are" thing but then the entire rest of the series constantly makes fun of him and tells him to lose weight and its so fucked up!!!!
