I really enjoyed Night at the Vampire Castle! I used to read a lot of choose your own adventure books growing up, but haven't managed to sit and concentrate on a full book since my teens. I finished this in 2 days! It was really engaging but I could also put it down when I finished a route too which was good compared to dropping out of a novel at a slow bit and never picking it up again. Thanks for giving me something to stop doomscrolling for a while! ♡

thank you!!! As someone disabled who can't always physically hold a book or read a page of words, something I love about making comics & choose-your-owns is getting a few readers who wouldn't usually (or aren't able to) read a novel.

The book world still has a lot of snobbery around book formats and visual (and audio) storytelling, but there are so many unique things unusual and alternative formats can do, as well as sometimes being more accessible!!!!

I gifted Night at the Vampire Castle to a friend who is a big fan of vampires and they ended up reading passages aloud throughout movie night. They told me they were determined to find every ending (we were especially interested in finding out which route had the “kill a billionaire” achievement) so I think it was a hit.

this is amazing thank you... I love when people look for all the endings (I 100% do this in choose-your-owns) and also sorry for disrupting your movie night

Hi! I just got my copy of Night At The Vampire Castle! Going to read it tonight. I'm really excited, thank you!

I'm extremely ill atm and every message like this gives me 1 HP to sustain myself further, ty anon

Hello! I’m predominantly an ebook reader, so I’m wondering, does the ebook version include links to jump to the relevant page or do you scroll around like flipping through a book? Thank you!

GOOD QUESTION.

1) First I should just say my choose-your-own books are designed for print and that’s how the big majority of people read them, particularly because of the illustrations - the page turns are pretty carefully planned so you get the reveal of a new piece of art at the right time and the planned size, for example.

Ebook info (edited now I've I checked it)

2) BUT, like my other choose-your-owns the ebook version does have clickable links that jump you straight to the right section.

I checked today now it's out, and it seems to work pretty smoothly on every ebook store I can find it - the sample only has the intro before it really gets into the choices, but should still give you a sense of how it works and how the illustrations display!

passed a post recently where you were talking about sofa designs (among other things lmao, it was a good post) and the moment I saw one of your drawings with people in it I was like wait a moment, I know that style! where do I know that from?? came here to check your blog - lo and behold, you wrote Finding Home!

I read a good chunk of it a few years ago and enjoyed it quite a bit (though I have yet to finish it just because my own mental health made it very hard to keep up with webtoons for a while there) but I look forward to finishing it (and probably rereading it because it's been. three to four years) someday!

anyways, your art style is quite recognizable and I like your work! that's all! <3

thank you anon this is the kind of thing I love to hear

Hi! Just happened on your sofa post and discovered your blog ! I just read your regency graphic novel and was astonished by how much I loved it — usually queer posi historical revisionism falls flat for me bc of the lack of research or plausibility and I really appreciate that this one is kind of fix it fic for Anne Lister if she wasn’t evil + that you talk about the changing position of south Asian aristocratic women in this time + that The Ton looks like no fun and everyone was gambling. Great research and nice YA friendship and romance story that I hope a lot of kids read ! Also liked the moment they go over the hill and see the factory (have you read Blood In The Machine or any other books about the luddites?)

THANK YOU!! "fix it fic for Anne Lister if she wasn’t evil" is an incredibly funny but not-inaccurate way to talk about I Shall Never Fall in Love, love to hear from someone who gets it.

I have NOT read Blood in the Machine, I usually only read non-fiction for specific book research - but someone I know made this very good free short comic (subtitle "What the Luddites can teach us about resisting an automated future") which might be the same topic? I'm always trying to tell people about it, so thank you for giving me an excuse to link to it.

Hello I absolutely love your comics. I've been reading I shall never fall in love repeatedly, I just adore it. Anyway I just wanted to say thank you for your amazing stories. One day I want to make comics like you do

I'm very late replying but it means a lot to hear this, thank you so much for sending - and yes please make your comics, I'm rooting for you

Hi! My school librarian recommended I Shall Never Fall in Love to me a little while back, and I LOVED it. The art is SO beautiful, and I’m impressed with how many arcs you were able to (masterfully) weave together and how real each character felt. And as a transmasc…ish…something (what even is gender), it made me happy that the angst around George’s queerness was mostly internal, and their friends, family, and servants were supportive of them.

It was just a lovely read all around, really. Stumbled upon your blog today and wanted to say thanks for creating it.

THANK YOU!!!! this means so much I don't know what to say, but let me at least say thanks for taking the time to send this very kind message (and to your librarian also!!)

I love your books!!! I work at a museum/library and we can request books to buy for our library/shop to sell!! I'll see if I can request all of yours but if they only have the budget for one/two, which would you recommend I put forward? 🐣

aaaa this is so nice to hear, thank you!!!

I Shall Never Fall in Love is probably the most obvious museum choice, since it has the sourced history section at the back (and the most mainstream coverage if you need to persuade someone... ->)

Or if the place you work caters to kids and offer games/ puzzle/ gift type stuff, Into the Dungeon is the shorter and most kid-friendly of my choose-your-own books!

Hi, sorry if I just totally missed it. But is it possible to get 'i shall never fall in love' as an eBook? Also I am a huge fan of your art! And my mother has mecfs too so big big big hugs to you. This shit is no joke.

Hello, yes you can definitely get it as an ebook! I’m not sure what region you’re in, but I’d try searching wherever you’d usually buy ebooks, I think it’s in most places (apple and google books, kobo etc). Thank you - and best wishes to your mum.

Hi!! I’ve been following your art for a long time and have been SO excited about “I Shall Never Fall In Love”. I finally got a chance to read it, and it’s absolutely stunning! I hope you know how lovely and impactful it is, as well as how big of a feat it is to illustrate a fully-colored ~280-page graphic novel. So amazing!!

I got a little teary at the end thinking about how much a book like this would have meant to me had I been able to see it when I was younger. It is still so rare to see transmasculinity anywhere.

As a history buff myself, I loved the “history corner” at the end and was surprised to find that I had read a lot of the reference material and was familiar with the other historians you’d consulted! It gave me a laugh to think of how small the “transgender historian and artist” sphere is, haha.

Love all your art and work and can’t wait to see your future works. As a fellow ME/CFS haver, I’m wishing you a low symptom day!

THIS IS SO NICE, THANK YOU!! V glad to hear I'm hitting my Exact Niche Audience. I do think I'm almost always subconsciously writing books I needed but never got when I was younger.

And it's very reassuring you've read a lot of the reference material - I'm definitely not an expert but that hopefully means I'm putting in sensible things and haven't missed anything too wildly obvious.

i first found Finding Home and was immediately all starry eyed about your art, which only strengthened with every update. i’m big on drawings of gorgeous nature and landscapes. then i realized how much of me i see in you as a disabled transmasc, and i can’t describe the hope and connection i began to feel. thank you for being you and for sharing your stories, both personal and fictional! my heart feels full. i bet it’ll feel fit to bursting when i start reading I Shall Never Fall in Love sometime in the next week 💚🌿

man, thank you so much for sending this message, this is so nice - and there are lots of us!! hope you like the book!

hey just wanted to pop in to say I LOVED reading I Shall Never Fall In Love!!! as a they/them myself with an interest in historical queerness it is right up my alley, and I really liked all the 'behind the scenes' stuff you included at the end! plus the way you draw expressions is amazing, it makes the characters feel so alive. I actually lended it to my mom once I was done reading the first time, and she loved it too! She hasn't read a lot of graphic novels, but she is a big fan of Jane Austen (I basically grew up watching Pride & Prejudice (2005) lol), and we had a great time talking about it ^v^

I feel like oftentimes people writing queer historical fiction think they have to choose between historical accuracy and having their characters be happy, since so often the stories we hear about queer historical figures are ones of tragedy. It's heartwarming to see someone write a story about queer people in history leading full and happy lives. Thank you for creating such a wonderful story and a beautiful piece of art <3

thank you so much for this message.... every time someone tells me they enjoyed the book and lent it to a family member it replenishes my life essence slightly!!! Yeah, it's interesting! I don't think there's one 'right' approach for queer historicals or fiction generally, but I'm personally drawn to making stories that feel hopeful in the end. Just because queer and trans people were (and are) living in an imperfect and often hostile world, it obviously doesn't mean there were no moments of happiness. Like... we have loads of evidence queer people historically would deliberately destroy letters to not leave a paper trail, so the records that survive are often legal ones of punishment. But EVEN IN THOSE, there are so many unquestionable glimpses of queer people's full, ordinary, and often happy lives.

Anyway I'm sure you know all this, just using this as an opportunity to talk about it since I find it really interesting. And I really think there's value in pointing people towards our real history of queer resilience - and complexity, and complicity - not exclusively looser fantastical stuff where the history is just set dressing.

heart so happy after I just finished I shall never fall in love. All of the characters were so loveable, Charlotte was the absolute cutest and the lil details you gave her and Sophie really made my heart swell. And George was so cute and relatable with the responsibility and trying to do right by other people and those outfits were also goals 😍 But I also loved how the ugly (imo 😬) shadow of Eleanor's mum was starting to fade away, Charlotte should absolutely marry the sweet farmer for love 🥹 such a lovely story you've created!

this is so lovely to hear, thank you so much!!

Hi! I just finished your book I Shall Never Fall In Love and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. As a queer fan of Jane Austen it made me so happy to see characters like me who were so vibrant and loved. The facial expressions and dramatics brought me so much joy and all the little historical references (the Austen quotes in the confessions had me squealing) was just lovely. As a young queer person it means so much to be able to have this kind of book and I am so grateful for it. I'm wishing Charlotte a happy marriage and Ellie and George their happiness in whatever form it comes. Thanks again for the wonderful story!
