the brazillian lgbt+ org i mentioned earlier, casa1, is closing bc many companies and esp international ones, stopped supporting them financially since in the current political climate it's not rewarding to openly support lgbt+ orgs. casa1 has helped many people as they have a housing program for lgbt+ people who are expelled from their homes, along with many social and cultural programs that also help the black and brown communities around them. They are accepting international donations, so they can close whithout leaving debts and being able to pay their workers (with the benefits they need) or hopefully be able to stay open. Donation information is below in case anyone can support them! As always reminder that US dollars are worth 5× a real, so even a little can help a lot.

frankenstein posting on the dash... makes me wish more of my besties have seen penny dreadful because i think what they did with victor frankenstein / the being/Adam/etc was genuinely sooo interesting

WELL as one beloved mutual cares i shall elaborate . so

@sawasawako the beloved mutual in question pointed out how interesting it is that many film adaptations of frankenstein chose not to give the being (aka "frankenstein's monster") a voice and how that's the version that has become most popular in western cultural thought, and i really think it's additionally interesting to contrast the choices of those films with the choices made in the show Penny Dreadful. im getting on my soapbox but under a readmore because i already know this post will be a mile long

Anonymous asked:

Do you have book recommendations on the history of southern africa?

It depends what you want to look i guess but:

Land Reform in Zimbabwe:

  • Zimbabwe Takes Back Its Land by Joseph Hanlon, Theresa Smart & Jeanette Manjengwa
  • Zimbabwe's Fast Track Land Reform by Prosper Matondi
  • Land and Argrarian Reform edited by Sam Moyo and Walter Chambati.

If you want something easy to read and less critical of the land reform then read the first one, if you want something more critical on it read the second, if you want something comprehensive and dense read the third.

On racial identity in Southern Africa:

  • Coloured by History, Shaped by Place edited by Zimitri Erasmus (going to do a full reread of the book soon)
  • Coloured: How Classification became culture by Tessa Dooms and Lynsey Chutel (Disagree with their conclusion to a degree but this is the most accessible book on the topic by far)
  • Making Race: Politics and Economics of Coloured Identity in South Africa by Ian Goldin
  • Regarding Muslims: From Slavery to Post-apartheid by Gabeba Baderoon.
  • The Creation of Tribalism in Southern Africa edited by Leroy Vail

On the colonial period in South Africa:

  • Anatomy of a South African Genocide by Mohamed Adhikari
  • The Broken String by Neil Bennun (not really an academic work and takes a paternalist tone towards the /Xam but is easy reading for a beginner with a critical eye).
  • Slavery in South Africa: Captive Labor on the Dutch Frontier by Fred Morton and Elizabeth Eldridge.
  • The House of Phalo - A History of the Xhosa People in the Days of their Independence by Jeff Peires

Apartheid in South Africa:

  • A Crime Against Humanity - Analysing the Repression of the Apartheid State by Max Coleman
  • I Write What I Like by Steve Biko

Mozambique

  • On the Origins of War in Mozambique by Sayaka Funada-Classen

Essentially just read all of these books with a critical eye and question each authors framing of these topics. I need to do more reading on a lot of these things but this is everything i could conjure up off rip.
