Day 7 - fish dishes / crack

Cirdan is the man of the sea. I imagine he also loves cooking. Cooking is a language of love and sharing food is something that comes naturally to Cirdan. Be it for friends, stranger, visitors. It doesn’t matter. Cirdan loves meeting people, making them feel welcome. I love the sea and I love fish dishes so it was really difficult for me to decide what I could share :

a freshly caught fish, grilled on the beach, simple, only fennel leaves and sea salt. Nothing fancy. The kind of supper you can have by the sea, watching the sun set, listening to Cirdan singing.

I was thinking a specialty I discovered in Nice (the city), the sardine fritters. But I didn’t find the recipe I was looking for. Imagine, on a plater, the almost whole sardine, dipped in the batter, and then fried. It’s a nice appetizer, for a lunch shore, after a long morning of work, rinse with a good wine. Maybe a little nap after? Cirdan won’t mind, he might even help you relax before the nap.

And then I remember this soup, that I love dearly, that is both hearty and rich in flavor, that takes times and love: the bouillabaisse (recipe bellow).

Yay French food ftw (lol I'm not usually overly fond of french food in itself actually).

This reminds me of a post that described Cirdan's style as "maritime chic" 😄, idk where it is.

Thank you for sharing this with us @emmathefanficgal , when you were in Nice did you happen to taste socca (chickpea flour pancake) ? It's also soo good.

coconut and coriander chutney

This chutney is good on an astral plan, in my humble opinion.

You can do anything you like with it once it's prepared, but i'm posting today because I like it best like this : three spoonfuls of it over a bit of white fish of your choice in a wrap of parchment paper, into the oven at 200°c for 10-20 mn. I'll always make this for my birthday.

You can serve this with rice.

  • 200 g freshly grated or dried coconut
  • 200 ml coconut milk
  • a big bunch of coriander, chopped
  • one or two chili peppers (spicy to your taste)
  • a chunk of ginger, grated (like a thumb)
  • 3 crushed garlic cloves
  • juice from 4 small limes
  • a handful of chopped fresh mint leaves (or dry if you don't have them)
  • a spoonful of vinegar (optionnal)
  • two to three spoonfuls of sugar
  • salt to taste

Just give this a good mix. Thank me later if you please.

As for Arda, i could picture this being eaten by the Teleri.

They live by the sea and love nothing more than seafood.

To prevent it from getting too repetitive they would sometimes eat plain fish, cooked to perfection, to savor the taste, but sometimes do this recipe as a palate cleaser, for feasts and / or cold days, before falling back into more simple habits in day-to-day life.

Tolkien Food Week - Hazelnut Treats

Tolkien Food Week 2025 Day 6: sweets | Dwarven realms

Hazelnut Treats [Thorin & Dís in Ered Luin) - AO3 link.

Recipe here.

Sorry to read that you are not feeling so well @tamilhobbit , can i point to you the chicken soup of day 1 to help you get better?

Joking aside, get well soon and thank you for taking the time to share this with us💊💊💊

Day 6 - sweets / Dwarven realms

I thought very hard about this. I love dwarves. Played often as one in DnD, loved them in the hobbit and love to pieces Gimli in LOTR.

So, what would my beloved people love to eat as sweets?

Of course, someone would think : rock candy… That seems possible if a bit cliché. I have a recipe, but it was more to show kids how cristals can grow (we have one for salt as well) and I will share it with you (if you want to have fun at home). Home made Rock Candy

As we saw in the Hobbit they seem to love eating, a lot and pretty much everything. Remind me a lot about hobbits by the way. So I thought about something I love to bake, because I am closer to be a dwarf than any other races in LOTR.

So, here you go, not with one but two recipes. I am linking the video I found them on. And, believe me, I use those recipe A LOT.

Kolache video and recipe. You have both version, savory and sweet.

Am I lazy to not rewrite the recipe? Yes. Probably. But I also love the music in the video for the cinnamon rolls AND Ethan is such a fun guy to watch cook (but not a dwarf). And, I say it again, not only are those recipes among my favorite, but my kids love them really really much.

🍬 LOL rock candy what a brillant idea! 🍬

Also, a kolache store arrived in my city not to long ago so ive heard of it but not tasted it atm. I'll do it and also compare to your recipe!

A Taste of Home
  • Pairing: Modern Sri Lankan! Eönwë/Gothmog
  • Prompts: Cakes/Teas | For @tolkien-food-week
  • Rating: General Audiences
  • Warnings: None
  • Wordcount: 2K words
  • Summary: Eönwë bakes a special treat for Gothmog on the evening of his return home.
  • This is also available on AO3
  • A/n: This is part of my “Anderson Road/The Sri Lankan Silm AU” universe, but it is a stand-alone story. I hope you all enjoy reading it!
  • A/n 2: Pictures and my own notes of the love-cake recipe can be found at the end of this story.

It was a late Saturday afternoon in Harrow, London, and Eönwë, a man who usually whiles away such time curled up in bed with a good book and his partner nestled against his lap, found himself in the kitchen, thoroughly occupied with mincing, toasting, and mixing ingredients for a cake. The townhouse he shared with Gothmog, his boyfriend of many years, was empty this day save for him—Gothmog had not yet returned from the trip he took on behalf of his company, and his flight was not expected to land for at least another hour. It left Eönwë enough time to prepare his surprise.

Thank you for this addition OP, this seems wonderful. What could one substitute for the pumpkin preserve, do you think? 🎃

Also, Eonwe fighting the urge to taste the batter 😅🥰

Chinese chicken salad

You know, this (tasted and approved) recipe is perfect for a meal between two Bffs :

🤍 Gimli and Legolas 🤍

Like their unique friendship it has a bit of both worlds :

- for the elf, it's packed full of veggies, crisp, vibrant, full of nutrients, light and crunchy

- for the dwarf, it is filling, flavorful, rich, surprising and comforting.

And it's so healthy even the Valar approve when they arrive in Valinor 🥗👌

Also if you don't already follow this creator, go and follow him, he's a gem 💫

Tolkien Food Week - Mushroom Pasties

Tolkien Food Week 2025 Day 4: vegetarian dishes | Elven realms

Mushroom Pasties - AO3 link.

Recipe here.

The glimpse of the relashionship you give us between Bilbo and Frodo is as cute as those !

Make sure you read the ficlets that go along those recipes, people (No rush🧡)

@tolkien-food-week nothing is better, after 12 hours of clinicals with the most critically ill patients i have ever seen, than coming home to see that my beloved hobbit-spirited husband made this for dinner. ❤️

Good timing on his part, OP!

This seems so cozy, comforting and tasty 🥣

Kudos for what you do!

Tolkien Food Week - Second Breakfast

Tolkien Food Week Day 3: teas and drinks [ish] | Gondor and Rohan

Second Breakfast - AO3 link.

I don’t really have a proper recipe for this one, given that it’s just tea and a fry-up!

The tea is Twinings English Breakfast, brewed at 98°C for a couple of minutes and then doctored with a teaspoon of brown sugar and a glug of fresh milk.

The mushrooms are chopped Swiss Brown (aka cremini or baby bella) mushrooms, cooked low and slow in butter with thyme. When they’re mostly done I add plenty of minced garlic, since it cooks pretty quickly. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

The potatoes are chopped and cooked in butter with salt, pepper, sage and a dash of paprika, with more parsley sprinkled on top at the end. I find a cast-iron skillet is good for getting a nice golden crust on them. You can parboil them first if you want.

(The sausage and bacon might look odd because they’re vegetarian/mock meat.) Fried tomatoes would also be quite hobbit-ish, but unfortunately I despise tomatoes. Feel free to add them.

Your photo is so beautiful OP it's the perfect image of a hobbit breakfast 🍞🍳🥓🥖🥞

Pippin approves.

You all have been awesome today!

We already have more than 25 recipes!

And don't forget to check the ao3 collection, it is steadily and discreetly rising to 5 works, many of them multi chapter, just like the dough of focaccia / flatbread / seed cakes that has been shared today...

Tomorrow is teas and drinks day / Gondor and Rohan

( @valar-did-me-wrong this is your sign to reappear from the void to share your favorite Chai recipe 💕)

@tolkien-food-week is a good occasion to make some good, plain bean soup!

While this a vibes-based, add-what-you-like dish which you don't need a recipe for, here's what I do:

Dice carrots, celery sticks and an onion, fry them for some minutes in butter or oil, then add whatever legumes you happen to have at home, some water (or stock if available), some big bay leaves and juniper berries. Season when the beans are soft.

You can add whatever vegetables you like: potatoes, turnips, leeks, green beans, courgette, cabbage etc. Instead of legumes, barley works very well too!

🥣 Thank you for this addition OP 🥣

Tolkien Food Week Day 1: Hobbits

Bag End Scones

also on ao3

"A big jug of coffee had just been set in the hearth, the seed cakes were gone, and the dwarves were starting on a round of buttered scones when there came--a loud knock. Not a ring, but a hard rat-tat on the hobbit's beautiful green door."

There are many good scone recipes; this is my family's. Recipe under the cut.

Day 1: Soups & Stews

  • Fandom: Lord of the Rings
  • Characters: Merry Brandybuck, Fatty Bolger
  • Rating: Gen

"There! That's our troublemakers put away," Merry announced as he strode into Crickhollow's kitchen. He wiped his hands on a cloth.

Fredegar looked up from the pot, the mushrooms ready by his side. "Let's hope they're not going to drown us with all that splashing."

Merry watched their stove. A steady flame, not too hot. Bright after the darkness over the Brandywine.

"What made them late?"

Slowly, Fredegar poured the mushrooms into the pot. Merry handed him salt. He checked the window shutter. Locked.

"I can't say, Fatty."

In the bathroom, the thumps sounded like hooves underneath the muffled song.

Recipe: Mushroom Soup

500 gr foraged mushrooms like boletus, leccinum or bay boletes, cleaned and sliced 30 gr butter 40 gr flour 1 onion, diced 250ml water or stock salt, pepper 1/2 tsp ground cumin 3 tbsp cream 1 tbsp parsley 1/4 tsp vinegar

WARNING!!! This recipe calls for a mix of foraged mushrooms for better flavour and texture and also because it was poor people food. Always let an experienced forager look at your mushrooms before you eat them. Never eat them raw. Never EVER trust AI or apps to identify your mushrooms. Not only will you die, it will suck the whole time.

Sweat your onions in the butter on medium-high heat. Add the flour and fry in the pan until golden brown. Add water or broth in stages for a very thick roux. Add the mushrooms, salt and pepper to taste, add the cumin, then stir it all together. Cover and let simmer - the mushrooms are going to lose a lot of water when cooking, so you'll end up with a thick stew. Once the mushrooms are done cooking, add the cream and the parsley. Bring back to a simmer and stir in the vinegar before serving.

Serve with latkes or bread dumplings.

Hobbits are so happy today with so many mushroom goodness recipes! And fanfic! Wonderful 💛

My submission for Day 1 of @tolkien-food-week is stuffed pumpkins! They are not a soup, but they are a very warm hearty meal that I think hobbits would enjoy.

Recipe: Make stuffing like you would for a Thanksgiving turkey, scoop a pumpkin like you're making a jack-o-lantern, bake. Slightly more details under the cut.

Yummy ! they're so cute 😍
