A large spin-splitting is critical for many spintronic devices, however, many van der Waals materials are centrosymmetric, limiting the range of spin-splitting they can host. Here, Feng et al show that by annealing, it is possible to obtain a PtTe/PtTe2 heterostructure, with an extremely large Rashba spin-splitting.
