Exposure of an occluded hemagglutinin epitope drives selection of a class of cross-protective influenza antibodies

Antibody cross-reactivity can help to prevent escape mutations from enabling viral escape, but underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here the authors identify influenza hemagglutinin epitopes that are exposed during viral replication and which result in the generation of a class of protective cross-reactive antibodies.

Blood DNA virome associates with autoimmune diseases and COVID-19

Analysis of the blood DNA virome in patients with COVID-19 and autoimmune disease associates endogenous HHV-6 (eHHV-6) and high anellovirus load with increased disease risk, most notably for systemic lupus erythematosus. eHHV-6 carriers show a distinct immune response.

Treatment of arthritis with a selective inhibitor of c-Fos/activator protein-1

Therapies that target only one inflammatory cytokine such as tumor necrosis factor α are often insufficient to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Aikawa et al. show that a small molecule targeting c-Fos/AP-1, a transcription factor that regulates both inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases, inhibits type II collagen-induced arthritis in mice.

Theoretical strength and rubber-like behaviour in micro-sized pyrolytic carbon

The combination of two-photon lithography and high-temperature pyrolysis is used to create micro-sized pyrolytic carbon with a compressive strength of 9.79 GPa cm³ g⁻¹. This enables rubber-like behaviour in micropillars, which can sustain compressive strain up to 50%.
