About the wiki
MiniDisc is a format that was revolutionary and successful but often misunderstood. This wiki is the home for the community of fans who use and collect the format.
We provide guides and FAQs for MiniDisc hobbyists and anyone interested in becoming one. We also document over 2000 different models of MD equipment, plus hundreds of blank discs, remotes, batteries, album releases, and community events. This includes archiving websites and other material that is falling offline and ensuring that it is accessible forever. Community members are encouraged to contribute as much as they can so that everyone can benefit from knowledge and experience gained over 30 years since the format's release.
Our goal
If it is MiniDisc-related, we want to host, organize, and preserve it.
Anything from the smallest errata to the most advanced reverse-engineering belongs here somewhere, and we commit to making it as available as possible.
Why?
Most MiniDisc-focused websites are from when the format was still being sold at retail. Most of these sites, or the sites they link to, are falling offline as domains expire. None allow user contributions.
The creation of the wiki was inspired by an outage of the Sony Insider Forums that was incredibly popular and helpful, but has since fallen into abandonment. The information there and elsewhere across the web should not be lost to time, and instead archived and updated for the future.
A resource that allows anyone to add new content will create a much broader and better collection of detail than one person or brand ever could.
The site
The wiki uses DokuWiki wiki software with a large number of external plugins to organize and present everything we host. DokuWiki is widely used, extensible, and easily archived.
