Yesterday, Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, visited Yoti to learn more about our facial age estimation technology and how it’s protecting children online. On the same day, Ofcom published the first version of the Protection of Children Codes of Practice for the Online Safety Act. It was a positive and engaging visit; Peter Kyle tried facial age estimation to see how it can create online spaces exclusively for adults, and specific online experiences for children and young people 🫶 With effective age assurance and by age gating different online areas, platforms can ensure they are providing age-appropriate content and experiences to their users.

Happy Tuesday, LinkedIn 👋 Check out these key stories from last week: Spanish government approves law that raises minimum age to open social media account to 16 The Spanish government is introducing a range of measures to increase the protection of minors in the digital world. These include raising the minimum age for social media to 16 unless children have parental consent, banning lootboxes, and jail terms for spreading AI-modified sexual content without consent. https://lnkd.in/eNQvbY7u ____________________________________________________ Missouri AG establishes first-in-the-nation age verification rule for porn Missouri will become the first state to require dual age verification for internet users who access pornographic material online. The rule, instituted by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, requires users who are accessing commercial porn sites to verify their age, not just on the website, but on the device that is accessing the website. https://lnkd.in/enn26dCe ____________________________________________________ 'Scammers used fake app to steal from me in person' A man who lost £1,000 worth of tools after being scammed by a fake banking app has said it makes you "lose faith in humanity". The apps mimic legitimate mobile banking platforms and allow fraudsters to fake bank transfers in person, show the seller a "successful payment" message and then walk away, leaving sellers thousands of pounds out of pocket. https://lnkd.in/eUyrTNUq

Morning LinkedIn 👋 here’s some stories that caught our eye last week: Age assurance growing out of one-tech-fits-all model to answer diverse needs Different use cases are likely to require different methods for proving age online. Each use case brings its own specifics, and it is becoming clear that what works for buying booze may not work in the case of porn. To address diversifying needs, the sector will have to diversify its approaches. https://lnkd.in/eXVkZ_7F ____________________________________________________ Meta expands restrictions for teen users to Facebook and Messenger Meta is expanding Teen Accounts to Facebook and Messenger. The system involves putting younger teens on the platforms into more restricted settings by default, with parental permission required in order to live stream or turn off image protections for messages. It was first introduced last September on Instagram. https://lnkd.in/eHcDbPDK ____________________________________________________ Don’t weaken online safety laws for UK-US trade deal, campaigners urge Child safety campaigners have warned the government against watering down landmark online laws as part of a UK-US trade deal, describing the prospect of a compromise as an “appalling sellout” that would be rejected by voters. The technology secretary, Peter Kyle, told LBC last month that the government was standing behind its online safety measures and “none of our protections for children and vulnerable people are up for negotiation”. https://lnkd.in/eAajhF-t ____________________________________________________ Fake job seekers are flooding U.S. companies that are hiring for remote positions, tech CEOs say Companies are facing a new threat: job seekers who aren’t who they say they are, using AI tools to fabricate photo IDs, generate employment histories and provide answers during interviews. The rise of AI-generated profiles means that by 2028 globally 1 in 4 job candidates will be fake, according to research and advisory firm Gartner. Once hired, an impostor can install malware to demand a ransom from a company, or steal its customer data, trade secrets or funds. https://lnkd.in/gfm5_uVv

🇫🇷 France’s new age verification law comes into full force on 11th April. From today, adult websites and platforms hosting pornographic content must implement privacy-preserving, data-minimising age verification solutions to prevent minors from accessing 18+ material. Protecting children online doesn’t have to come at the cost of personal privacy. Our age verification solutions are built with privacy by design, helping platforms comply with the new French law — without collecting or storing personal data. 📖 In our blog, we break down what the law means, who it applies to, and how platforms can implement compliant, privacy-preserving age checks. https://lnkd.in/e7ra95NT
