London Euston
In line with Government direction, work to construct the HS2 station at Euston was paused on 9 March 2023 due to inflationary pressure and the need to find a more affordable design.
On 4 October 2023, the Government announced that it would be redirecting funding from HS2 to other transport projects around the country but restated its commitment to completing Phase 1 of HS2 between Birmingham and London, with a rescoped Euston station. The Government will appoint a development company, separate from HS2 Ltd, to manage the delivery of Euston Station and the wider development.
Whilst options for the delivery of Euston are explored, HS2 Ltd continues to complete ‘no regrets’ enabling works across the HS2 site and other activities to make the site safe while the main construction work is paused.
This includes completing the new Traction Substation (a structure to house infrastructure for the London Underground) and a programme of essential utility diversion work around the station, creating a new utilities corridor to enable the future construction of a new station.
Station construction
During the early and site preparation works, archaeologists working on the HS2 project in Euston discovered Victorian time capsules and the remains of Captain Matthew Flinders, the Royal Navy explorer who led the first circumnavigation of Australia.

Station design
The government has set out its intention to deliver a 6-platform station that can accommodate the trains we will run to Birmingham and onwards and that best supports regeneration of the local area. Updates will be provided as the development-led Euston project progresses.
What we're delivering for Euston Station
The Traction Sub Station (TSS) will enable the relocation of equipment needed to provide services and ventilation for the safe operation of the Northern Line.
