New checklist for transparent, accurate and reliable health estimates

28 June 2016 – A checklist of 18 best practices developed by WHO and researchers from around the world, the Guidelines for Accurate and Transparent Health Estimates Reporting (GATHER) sets the standard for disclosing how health estimates are developed. Several estimates compiled by WHO already follow GATHER principles, including estimates on child mortality, childhood causes of death, and maternal mortality.

Global food safety standards body issues new guidance

28 June 2016 – The international food standards-setting body, the Codex Alimentarius Commission, is meeting to discuss guidelines and standards for a range of issues, including the control of Salmonella in beef and pork, food hygiene to control foodborne parasites, nutrient reference values for food package nutrition labels, safety of food additives, pesticide residues in food, and arsenic levels in rice. The Codex is also considering its future work on antimicrobial resistance.

Containing outbreaks in Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo

22 June 2016 – On 20 June the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ministry of Health declared a yellow fever epidemic. Angola has reported close to 3000 suspected yellow fever cases. Despite extensive mass vaccination campaigns circulation of the virus persists. Health advice for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games

21 June 2016 – WHO, today, releases health advice for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games geared towards national health authorities and health workers. The health advice gives measures travellers can take to be as safe as possible from any public health risk. WHO provides advice and support to host governments preparing for mass gathering events, including major sporting, religious, and cultural events.

New data initiative for risk factors of noncommunicable diseases

21 June 2016 – A new initiative, called Data for Health, is helping WHO to conduct household surveys on risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in Morocco and Zambia initially, with an 4 additional countries to be selected in the coming months. Using mobile phones, this initiative will help health authorities to establish baseline data and build strong information collection systems for all NCD-related health issues.
