“AI is not here to take your job. It’s here to make your work more efficient.” This reminder from Uzma F Qureishi of Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi stood out during our recent Augmented Thinking AI Masterclass. One of the most important discussions was around change management. Many professionals still meet AI with resistance, not because the tools aren’t useful, but because the shift hasn’t been guided well. This masterclass is designed for leaders, managers, and professionals who want to introduce AI the right way. We teach practical tools, strategy, team readiness, and how to handle the real concerns people have about AI in the workplace. Join us for the final public cohort of 2025 on 27th November in Nairobi and take back practical skills to lead this shift with confidence. Register here: https://lnkd.in/dfRCiaiQ

What does it take to build and leverage an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system that actually works in an LMIC? We’ve learned it’s 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞. Here are our Big 5 Rules; insights from our journey to create and leverage a locally grounded, data-driven health records repository at Aga Khan University Hospitals. Highlights from #DataFestAfrica2025 at Aga Khan University! This year’s festival themed “ #ReclaimingOurDataFutures,” gathered innovators, researchers, artists, changemakers and leaders with the aim of exploring how Africa can shape ethical and community-driven AI systems truly serve local needs. Qhala's, Barbara Osiro joined in moderating a community dialogue: “From AI Consumer to Producer: What Will It Take?” The discussion highlighted: 1️⃣ Africa is not short of talent - What’s needed are stronger access pathways, opportunities, and supportive governance. 2️⃣ Localization matters - AI must reflect our languages, cultures, and lived experiences to be meaningful and impactful. 3️⃣ The ecosystem is still maturing - Startups face barriers moving from prototype to production, signaling the need for community-driven data ecosystems. 4️⃣ AI Literacy is essential, but must be paired with equitable access to infrastructure to avoid widening inequality. Barbara also introduced the Africa AI Talent Readiness Index by Qhala — a tool mapping capacity strengths and investment priorities across the continent ➡️ https://lnkd.in/duBk-yJJ Watch the highlights and relive the energy, creativity, and bold conversations redefining Africa’s data and AI future. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚? Women in Africa face more 𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫, and carry crushing financial and social burdens. In some cases, 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 160% 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬, and each loss leaves children without mothers. The journey to recovery is not only medical. It’s emotional, financial, and deeply personal. At Aga Khan University, we’re working to change this story. Our researchers are exploring how genetics shape cancer in African women, uncovering differences that may explain why it often appears earlier, and more aggressively. We are driving change through research, early detection, better screening, and confronting stigma.
