  • One year ago, wildfires in Jasper, Canada forced 25,000 people to evacuate and destroyed 30% of structures in the charming mountain town. Roie was among those displaced by the disaster. She’d moved to Jasper in January 2024 to work and live with  her sister’s family, but the fires destroyed their home. She found free, emergency housing through Airbnb.org and stayed with local Superhost Jelly for a month. During that time, she regained a sense of normalcy and made plans to rebuild with her sister. Wildfire season is underway. Learn how you can help people like Roie when disasters happen at https://lnkd.in/g8Pwd7c7.

  • Our local partner, All Hands and Hearts, shared the video below with us this week from Skylyn whose family received free, emergency housing through Airbnb.org in Central Texas. Learn more about the response and how to get and give help here: https://lnkd.in/e3F6FQXv

The water rose faster than anyone expected. On July 5, Skylyn was asleep in her home in Liberty Hill, Texas, when a sheriff came to warn her family about nearby flooding. At first, they didn’t realize the severity of the situation, as flooding is rare in their community, until a relative arrived and urged them to evacuate immediately. They managed to get to safety, but their home was badly damaged and is now uninhabitable until repairs can be made. Through our partnership with Airbnb.org, we’ve helped survivors of the floods like Skylyn during some of the most terrifying and uncertain moments of their lives, offering safe, emergency housing.

I recently traveled across Southeast Asia to strengthen Airbnb.org’s disaster response partnerships and meet with our community of hosts. In Selangor, I met with YB Ng Suee Lim, Selangor’s Tourism and Local Government Minister, about our Putra Heights fire response. Thanks to strong local collaboration, Airbnb.org provided free emergency housing for 116 families. This resulted in over 2,400 nights of Airbnb.org stays. We talked about how Airbnb.org could support future emergencies.  I also had the pleasure of meeting Amirul, a dedicated host in Selangor, and longtime partners Ken & Eunice from HostPlatform—both of whom continue to support Airbnb.org’s mission. In Bangkok, I connected with the Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to reflect on Airbnb.org’s response in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Together, we visited with local hosts who opened their homes to evacuees after the earthquake, and experienced their warmth and hospitality firsthand. These conversations and partnerships reinforced a clear truth: our strength lies in real people willing to open their doors in crisis. The incredible generosity of our donors and hospitality of hosts—echoed across both cities—are the true driving force behind Airbnb.org's impact. Thank you to every host and leader who makes this possible. I’m confident that together, Airbnb.org can help communities in their toughest moments.

Airbnb.org was founded to help communities in times of crisis. Since the wildfires began in Los Angeles, Airbnb.org has provided emergency housing to more than 23,000 people forced from their homes. Today, we’re deepening our commitment to the region by supporting Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles' work to rebuild homes, perform critical repairs, and remediate smoke damage for the thousands of Angelenos impacted by the wildfires earlier this year. https://lnkd.in/g652k2-A

  • From the other side of the country, Loren Benn, the eldest of seven, evacuated her family from the Eaton fires – including her father who has a pulmonary disease and is on oxygen. Hours later, the family learned their parents’ home, their grandmothers’ home, and their brothers’ home had burned. Through Airbnb.org, Loren and her 9 family members were able to stay together, cook a home-made meal, and lean-on each for support as they found a new permanent housing solution. • Eshele is a therapist who grew up in Altadena, CA, where she’s also raised her 11-year-old son, Brayden. She, her mother, and her two sisters all lost their homes in the wildfires. While staying in emergency housing for free through Airbnb.org, Eshele continued working to provide mental health services to her community, and Brayden was able to continue his dance classes. “Being in this space has allowed me to breathe, and rest, and know that I’m protected and taken care of,” Eshele said. Watch Eshele and Brayden’s story and learn more about them at https://lnkd.in/d5QvnsvQ. In partnership with 211 LA, Airbnb.org has provided free emergency housing to 21,000 LA residents displaced by the wildfires and is continuing to offer support.
