Dear Junior Developer: You Know More Than You Think. Start Acting Like It To all the new developers out there: welcome. You’ve just finished your education, bootcamp, or career switch. You know your syntax. Your Git game is solid. You’ve wrestled with CSS and survived. You’re not new to this, you’re just new here. Honestly, you probably know more about modern dev workflows than I do, and I’ve been doing this for over twenty years. I’ve sat in interviews where candidates with just a couple of years under their belt answered questions that had me quietly opening a new tab later to look things up. The pace of this industry is wild, and your fresh knowledge is no joke. Everyone talks about how developers need soft skills, It’s practically a chorus at this point. But what does that actually mean? Let me give you my definition. It’s about having a professional backbone. You might be junior by title, but that does not mean you are just supposed to sit quietly in meetings, nod along, and hope someone else catches the weird deadline or impossible spec. If something doesn’t make sense, speak up. When a solution feels off, trust your instincts and raise the question. And if someone proposes building a spaceship out of duct tape and jQuery, don’t be afraid to ask why. You’re allowed to challenge ideas. You’re allowed to say no. Your perspective matters! In fact, those fresh eyes of yours might be more valuable than a decade of “we’ve always done it this way.” Remember the Volkswagen emissions scandal? Millions of cars. Billions in fines. Global fallout. Do you know who the first person charged and jailed was? Not a CEO. Not a board member. It was James Liang, a software engineer who didn’t speak up.

As a Flutter developer, I've explored and worked with a wide range of state management solutions. Each one has its own strengths, and through hands-on experience, I've gained insights into when and where they shine the most. Here’s a breakdown of what I’ve used and learned: 1. BLoC (Business Logic Component) BLoC offers a neat, clean, and scalable architecture that clearly separates business logic from UI. It’s perfect for mid to large-scale projects where maintainability and structure are key. Once you get used to it, you’ll appreciate the discipline it brings to your codebase. Ideal when working in teams and on enterprise-grade apps. 2. Riverpod One of my personal favorites. Riverpod is flexible, well-structured, and doesn’t rely on Flutter-specific widgets. It’s suitable for all project sizes — small, medium, or large. It also comes with built-in dependency injection, so you don’t need an additional package for that. With notifier, asyncNotifier, and the Riverpod Generator, it makes state management a powerful and enjoyable experience. Try it once, and you'll likely stick with it. 3. MobX MobX is reactive and feels very similar to GetX but with a more declarative twist. It’s super easy to learn — just remember a few key annotations like @observable and @action. Great for smaller to mid-size projects, especially if you like observable-driven programming. It brings a certain joy to coding when you get into the rhythm. 4. GetX Simplicity at its best. GetX is lightweight, easy to use, and powerful — providing state management, routing, and service layers with minimal boilerplate. One of its biggest strengths is the variety of tools it offers, including GetX Services, Bindings, and Controllers, which help organize and manage your app’s structure efficiently. It's suitable for projects of any scale, and perfect for rapid development. While it may not enforce strict structure like BLoC or Riverpod, it shines in speed and ease of use — especially for solo devs or smaller teams. 5. Provider Provider is one of the first state management solutions many Flutter devs learn — and for good reason. It’s simple, intuitive, and integrates well with Flutter's reactive nature. A good entry point for beginners and still relevant for simple to moderately complex projects. 6. Redux Though not my go-to for most projects today, Redux is a great learning experience. It promotes immutable state and unidirectional data flow. If you come from a React or frontend-heavy background, you’ll appreciate the structure Redux offers. Best for large projects with a strict need for state predictability and debugging.
