In the constantly shifting landscape of technology and media, YouTube has not just survived. Over the last 20 years, we’ve fundamentally reshaped global culture and entertainment through bold, strategic product innovation. Along the way, a video-sharing startup above a pizza parlor became the largest streaming platform in the world. Over the past few weeks, Fast Company published a powerful, comprehensive look at how our platform has stayed ahead of the curve and navigated critical inflection points. A few highlights: - We built Content ID: a brilliant, first-of-its-kind system that allowed rights holders to identify their IP and choose to monetize it (rather than just block it). - In 2007, the YouTube Partner Program was a radical bet on the creativity and ambition of people all over the world, establishing the original creator economy. We’ve continued to build on that foundation with innovations like skippable ads, which have created an incentive for higher-quality content and have helped us pay out over $100B to creators, artists, and media companies in the past four years alone. - We noticed viewers shifting to the Living Room and doubled down on making our TV experience as compelling as possible. YouTube on TV is now our fastest-growing platform, and viewing on TV has surpassed mobile viewing in the U.S. As we see creators building longer-form series, we’re introducing features to organize their content into shows, seasons, and episodes. - We launched Shorts, which are now averaging 200B views a day—a critical component of a broader ecosystem spanning everything from 15-second clips to 15-hour live streams. - When we saw how viewers were watching (not just listening to) podcasts, we made significant investments in bringing podcasters onboard. YouTube now reaches 1B monthly podcast viewers. At YouTube, we believe technology should empower human creativity and we see AI as the foundation of the next generation of creative tools. What happens when a cult-classic YouTube format turns 10? We found out his past weekend, as we teamed up with Amelia Dimoldenberg to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Chicken Shop Date with a sold-out, experiential event in London. It was the perfect match, as we continue our 20th anniversary celebrations, and Amelia uses her 10-year milestone to create something aimed at giving back to the next generation of aspiring creators. The exhibition took visitors on a humorous, informative, and interactive journey through the making of the show and the broader creative process, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how Chicken Shop Date was developed from concept to cult classic. Crucially, the event also celebrated the Dimz Inc. Academy and its mission to open pathways into the creative industries for aspiring talent. It's a masterclass in how content creators are building businesses that pay it forward.
