The internet was supposed to open worlds. Instead, some children are trapped in loops of shame, anxiety, and unwanted contact, fed by the very systems that promised connection. Not all freedom online feels free. That’s why 109 children and young people across 10 countries came together to demand something better:     A #SafetyNet Manifesto that redefines digital wellbeing as a right, not a privilege. They’re calling for platforms and policies that put mental health, safety, and support first, before growth, engagement, or profit. Digital safety isn’t just about what children are protected from. It’s about what they’re empowered to access, feel, and become. Young people feel like they are walking a digital tightrope. As technology evolves, they need stakeholders to work together to keep strengthening a ‘SafetyNet’ to protect them from exploitation and abuse online.   They want the right protections, the right tools, and the right to exist online without fear.  They want a digital world designed with them and which protects their wellbeing. They deserve a safer digital world where no one falls through the gaps. Earlier this month (1st July), I participated in and spoke at the Informal Conference of Ministers on the 15th Anniversary of the Council of Europe #LanzaroteConvention hosted by the government of #Malta. My intervention focused on connecting the Lanzarote Convention to the broader international framework for preventing and protecting children from sexual exploitation and abuse. I highlighted how my mandate and many of the recommendations in my reports align with the objectives of the #LanzaroteConvention, and can support the work of the #LanzaroteCommittee in its monitoring role and in identifying good practices. I emphasized that safeguarding children from sexual exploitation and abuse requires holistic prevention strategies, including civil society engagement, education, awareness campaigns, and robust protection mechanisms such as specialized training, victim support services, and effective law enforcement. To fully integrate the #LanzaroteConvention into the broader international landscape, particularly within UN contexts, strategic actions are needed to embed it into the work of #UN Treaty Bodies, especially #CRC Committee. For instance, when formulating its General Comments, which are authoritative interpretations of the #UNCRC, the #CRCCommittee can draw inspiration from regional conventions like the #Lanzarote Convention and the recommendations of its Committee. Another key step would be to strengthen the existing collaboration between my mandate and the Lanzarote Committee. During country visits particularly to State Parties to the Convention, the Lanzarote Committee’s reports provide valuable insights for assessing compliance with international standards. Conversely, my own reports from these visits can offer on-the-ground perspectives that support the Committee’s monitoring efforts. Raising awareness of the #Lanzarote Convention’s provisions can further enhance its visibility within the #UN system and amongst its agencies. Delivering training and technical assistance to child protection professionals including UN field offices, national authorities, and NGOs on the Convention’s standards, guidelines, and its Committee’s recommendations can improve its implementation and integration into the global child protection framework. Linking the Lanzarote Convention to the broader international context is not a difficult task, but it requires strengthening collaborations, fostering multilateral cooperation, and implementing innovative strategies to effectively prevent and combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. ! What if our digital spaces were truly designed as playgrounds where every child and youth could thrive, explore, and even make mistakes safely? Where curiosity wasn’t punished. Where learning came with grace. Where platforms grew with children, not just creating for them. Yet for too many young people, the digital world feels more like a tightrope than a playground: high stakes, low support. That’s why 109 young people from 10 countries came together to co-create the #SafetyNet Manifesto — a global roadmap for what they need to feel safe, empowered, and seen in digital spaces. Their call is clear: “Design with us, not for us.” Because protection without participation is just another form of exclusion. Among their eight digital rights is one that should challenge every policymaker, platform, and product designer: 🛝 The Right to Child and Youth-Centred Experiences. A right to digital spaces that aren’t just accessible but attuned to their realities. Spaces that evolve with them. That honour their growth. That makes room for mistakes, recovery, and resilience.
