We’re delighted to hear our colleague Sofia Zapounidou in the podcast Enterprise Wide Search. Sofia’s team, responsible for metadata and identifiers at the Publications Office of the European Union, is rethinking how we catalogue non-legal publications. Their aim is to move from their current traditional way of working with stand-alone bibliographical records to a rich, interoperable linked data model serving both human and machine users alike, opening up a whole range of new possibilities. It requires a real shift in mindset. We know very well that information only becomes useful when it's structured with the user in mind. Among Sofia’s points in the podcast is the fact that library and information science professionals have long worked with clarity, structure and user-centred principles. Indeed, the core mission of libraries has always been to serve user needs, making information usable, navigable and relevant. But now there is a need to catalogue with the needs of both humans and machines in mind. Listen to the podcast to see how they have been quietly helping to solve the problems the data world is now facing!
Sofia Zapounidou is one of the many brilliant voices from Library and Information Science that contributes to data and ai. An absolute pleasure to have you on, Sofia! I could tell that Emma McGrattan was surprised and amazed with your perspectives. I hope more conversations are to come. I think you will find this conversation interesting Fabiola Aparecida Vizentim Jeffrey Tyzzer Jessica Talisman Jenna Jordan Joseph True Amalia Child Lynn Bender Pernille Helene Kjeldsen and many others #library #informationscience #data #ai #linkedopendata #metadata

⚖️ World Day for International Justice On 17 July, we mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), a day to recognise the global pursuit of justice and the fight against impunity. The ICC, based in The Hague, was the first permanent international criminal court, created to prosecute the gravest crimes that affect the international community as a whole: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. While the ICC operates independently and outside the #EU framework, its mission resonates with our shared commitment to the rule of law, accountability, and human dignity. At the heart of the #EU, the #CJEU works every day to uphold #EUlaw, ensuring that justice knows no borders. Today, we reaffirm this mission and stand alongside all institutions working to deliver justice, across EU and around the world.
