RAISE (Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education) is a new MIT-wide initiative headquartered in the MIT Media Lab and in collaboration with the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and MIT Open Learning. In the face of this accelerating change, our research and impact mission is to advance equity in learning, education and computational action to rethink and innovate how to holistically and equitably prepare diverse K-12 students, an inclusive workforce, and lifelong learners to be successful, responsible, and engaged in an increasingly AI-powered society.

  • From the lab to the clinic, our next speaker is a medical entrepreneur using AI and innovation to tackle healthcare challenges across Latin America. Dr. Kevin Morales Chamorro is a medical doctor, entrepreneur, and researcher recognized for his pioneering work in medical technology and public health impact. He is the CEO and founder of MedETechni, a company developing AI-driven and UV-based solutions to fight infections and accelerate wound healing. A dedicated leader in innovation, Kevin is a member of IEEE, an MIT Innovators Under 35 honoree, a YLAI Fellow, and was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.   • Our next speaker is a young changemaker using STEAM to spark environmental awareness in her community and beyond. Ana Lucía Pérez Escalera is a 13-year-old homeschooled student from Puerto Rico with a deep passion for science, art, and technology. As a self-taught learner, she is constantly seeking new ways to grow her knowledge and apply it to meaningful causes. Ana Lucía is the founder of De a Pokito por Puerto Rico, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating communities about the importance of caring for the environment through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).   • The Global AI Hackathon Final Showcase & Awards wouldn’t be complete without Natalie Lao—an advocate for youth-driven innovation and equitable access to technology through creative, hands-on learning. Natalie is the Executive Director of the App Inventor Foundation and her mission is to empower anyone, anywhere, of any age to create meaningful technologies that can transform their lives and the lives of those around them. She fell in love with App Inventor while teaching high school computer science and seeing firsthand how it transformed students from passive consumers into confident, creative tech makers. Since then, she has helped scale its impact globally—starting as an undergraduate research assistant in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology App Inventor Lab, where she later earned her B.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and AI. At MIT, Natalie co-created and taught the Deep Learning Practicum, led the Inclusive AI Literacy and Learning project, and has conducted research featured by MIT News and UNESCO.   • Our final judge for the Global AI Hackathon Final Showcase & Awards is a pioneer in accessible computing and a long-time champion of using technology to empower learners around the world! Mark Friedman is a co-founder of the App Inventor project and a Board Member of the App Inventor Foundation. He led App Inventor’s early development as technical lead and manager at Google, and now continues to support its growth as an MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). Mark has helped grow MIT App Inventor from a small research initiative into a global platform used by millions of students, educators, and professional developers. He remains deeply committed to its mission of democratizing coding and empowering learners around the world. In addition to his work with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Google, Mark has held leadership roles at major tech companies—including Microsoft and Oracle—as well as early-stage startups like Thunkable and Piper.
