    On this day... Today in 1960 John McCarthy published a paper in which he laid out his design for #Lisp—one of the earliest ever high-level programming languages and one that’s still in use today. Lisp was first implemented on an #IBM 704 computer using punched cards.

    On this day... Today in 1965 the co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor Gordon Moore published his paper in which he predicted a doubling every year in the number of components per integrated circuit. This observation and its revisions would become known as “Moore’s Law”.

    On this day... Today in 1988, #Apple sued Microsoft for copyright infringement, a few months after #Microsoft released Windows 2.0. The suit alleged that Microsoft copied visual displays from the #Macintosh without a license. A judge ultimately ruled that 179 of the 189 contested displays were covered by existing licenses, with the rest ineligible to be copyrighted.

    Tim Berners-Lee Proposes the Web On this day... Today in 1989 Tim Berners-Lee submitted a proposal to #CERN for a system that would become the world wide web. Initially sparse on details, the proposal was more of a request to undertake research. It has since been digitised to read online.

    On this day... Today in 1993, the PowerOpen Association formed in order to agree the PowerOpen Environment open standard for running a Unix-based operating system on the PowerPC computer architecture. The association marked a historic first technology partnership between #Apple and #IBM. The PowerOpen Environment led to computers such as Apple’s #PowerPC, but the Association disbanded in 1995 due to the increasing availability of #Unix and #Linux distributions.

    On this day... Today in 1955, a program called “Director” was demonstrated at the #MIT Servomechanisms Laboratory first symposium on digital fire control. Director ran on the “Whirlwind”, a large-scale electronic stored-program vacuum tube computer originally made for flight simulation. Director allocated and controlled memory, storage, and other resources automatically during execution of a user’s program, making it arguably the first operating system.

    On this day... Today in 1996, the first photos of #Pluto were released to the public. Taken by the #Hubble Telescope, the photos showed nearly the entire surface of Pluto, captured as the planet rotated through a 6.4-day period. The pictures revealed Pluto’s divided landscape, with a “ragged” northern polar cap bisected by a dark strip, a bright spot seen rotating with the planet, a cluster of dark spots, and a bright linear marking.
