About us
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. This data is fully available to the national meteorological services in the Member States. The Centre also offers a catalogue of forecast data that can be purchased by businesses worldwide and other commercial customers. The supercomputer facility (and associated data archive) at ECMWF is one of the largest of its type in Europe and Member States can use 25% of its capacity for their own purposes. The organisation was established in 1975 and now employs around 500 staff from more than 30 countries. ECMWF is one of the six members of the Co-ordinated Organisations, which also include the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe (CoE), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).

Podcast Alert! Deutsch Version unten: It has never been more important to understand the effects of a changing climate, especially when it comes to protecting those most at risk. I recently had the honour of hosting Dr Claudia Di Napoli, an expert in weather- and climate-induced health hazards at European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF, for a discussion on how episodes of heat stress affect the human body, particularly in workplace settings.

🌍🌐 New Destination Earth (DestinE) paper published: Advances in Earth system digital twin technology. A large team of scientists from #ECMWF and many institutions across Europe have published a new paper in the Journal of the European Meteorological Society. The paper summarises achievements in the development of Earth system digital twins during Phase I, and key objectives of the ongoing Phase II of the European Commission’s #DestinE initiative. The paper also reflects the scale and ambition of this effort, and the power of working together across Europe. 🌟 Key achievements during Phase I include the development and demonstration of capabilities of the DestinE components ECMWF is responsible for implementing in close collaboration with over 100 institutions across Europe: • 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 (𝗗𝗧𝗘), a modular software environment that manages the complex digital twin workflows, as well as the handling of and access to the large volumes of digital twin data across the distributed EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) supercomputers and DestinE infrastructure. • 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗻, delivering multi-decadal climate simulations and storyline simulations of extreme events, at km-scale resolutions. • 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿-𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝗻, targeting the prediction of high-impact weather events on a timescale of a few days ahead. 🎯 The paper also looks ahead to: • The operationalisation and further enhancement of the digital twin technology • Integration of AI and ML for efficiency, interactivity, and uncertainty quantification • Strengthening data usability and trust and expanding co-design with users 📑 Read the full paper: https://lnkd.in/gfrng8G7
