Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn a language.

About us

Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Duolingo is the most downloaded education app in the history of the App Store and in 2019 became the top-grossing education app worldwide. We set out to do something altogether different in the learning space. Learning a new language is hard; we believe it should be fun. We use bite-sized lessons that feel like playing a game to keep our learners motivated. Learning a new language can also be expensive, and because we believe it should be free, we made it so. Duolingo has been named to: BuiltIn's Best Places to Work (2023), Fast Company Best Workplaces for Innovators (2022), Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Education Company (2022), among others.

☀️ Shoutout to all the parents who are taking on a couple extra direct reports (aka children) this summer, i.e. juggling new routines while school’s out. How are you spending time with your summertime direct reports? Slip n slides or water balloon fights (𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀)  Sibling rivalry (𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁)  Revamping chore charts (𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗞𝗥𝘀 & 𝗞𝗣𝗜𝘀)  Something else: 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀! #onlyatduolingo

  • Writing safe, consistent code is great. Writing the same boilerplate 12 times? Less great. We’re always looking for ways to make our engineers’ lives easier, so when Swift introduced Macros in 2023, we were curious: 🤔 Could we use them to promote better architecture and reduce repetitive code? The answer? Yes! Our iOS Client Architecture team used Swift Macros to auto-generate over 4,300 lines of code across our MVVM DataSources, saving time, reducing bugs, and streamlining the entire developer experience. Even better? The macro-generated code is tested, reliable, and never needs to be written (or reviewed) by hand. 👇 Read our deep dive below on how we did it and why we’re just getting started. Swift Macros is new and not widely adopted yet. But we love trying emerging tools when they make our code cleaner and our team faster. If that sounds like your kind of #engineering, we’re hiring!

  • Wow, Aayush Bhoj! 1,111 days! That’s 3+ years of consistency, curiosity, and commitment, all in the pursuit of learning something new. 💚 We’re celebrating Aayush for hitting a truly incredible milestone on Duolingo. Not because of the number but because of what it represents: showing up, every day, even for 5 minutes. What matters more than being perfect is being persistent, building knowledge one small step at a time. Aayush, we’re proud to be part of your journey. Here’s to the next 1,111 days! Please congratulate him with us in the comments! 🦉💪 #duolingo

Recently hit a 1111-day streak on Duolingo ! 🇩🇪 I’ve been learning German, one small step at a time. Although I’m still not fluent, this milestone reminds me that showing up matters more than being perfect. This wasn’t about fluency or speed - it was about consistency. 📆 1,111 days of not breaking the chain - that’s more than 3 years of consistency. ⏱️ Some days, just 5 minutes. 💡 Every day, a reminder that small habits can stick. Consider this: 1^1111 = 1 (1.005)^1111 ≈ 255 Improving yourself just 0.5% every day for 1111 days results in 255x growth - all from small, consistent effort. Consistency is key in every field. I remember during my JEE preparation, I wasn’t the smartest or the fastest problem-solver, but I was consistent for 2 years - and that made all the difference. Whether it’s language learning, exam prep, or career skills, sometimes it’s not about giant leaps, but steady progress. Nicht vergessen: langsam, aber sicher.

  • How do you make a language learning app feel joyful, responsive, and alive? For us at Duolingo, a big part of the answer is Rive. Rive is a real-time animation tool that lets designers, artists, and animators create interactive graphics that respond dynamically to user input. With Rive, we can easily design experiences (like Video Call with Lily!) that feel alive and playful, making interactivity more intuitive, more scalable, and more fun. Instead of shipping dozens of pre-built animations, we build 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: small loops, expressions, and gestures that we can blend dynamically using Rive’s State Machine. This has impact in two big ways: 1) Our motion feels fluid, thoughtful, and light on performance 2) We can quickly scale delight across our entire app experience Whether it’s loading screens, lesson feedback, or big celebration moments, Rive helps us build smooth, dynamic animations that bring personality and polish to every part of Duolingo. #design
