Leveraging the latest version of Roof Condition Rating (RCR), CAPE found that residential roofs in severe condition are approximately twice as likely to suffer a wind/hail claim than those in excellent condition. Similar to the claim frequency for the wind peril alone, the combined wind/hail claim frequency is highest for residential roofs in severe condition and lowest for those in excellent condition. CAPE was honored to support the recent Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society research entitled “Advanced Analytics in Insurance: Utilizing Building Footprints Derived from Machine Learning and High-Resolution Imagery.” CAPE’s regulatory leader, Christopher Clickner, ACAS, MAAA, was a member of the Project Oversight Group, and the CAPE team provided data for the study that shows the benefits of using aerial imagery-derived data to better represent wildfire property risks. The research found that a structure’s relationship to its surrounding environment is a key driver of its wildfire risk in several ways: ➡️ The concentration of nearby structures (structure density) has been identified as a driver of fire’s ability to spread rapidly, as other structures can become fuel during a conflagration event. ➡️ Surrounding vegetation can also offer fuel to grow or spread a fire. This includes landscaping in a home’s immediate proximity, which can either act as a defensible buffer or provide connective fuels, as well as wildland vegetation for WUI communities. ➡️ Aerial imagery and computer vision models can help provide actionable data regarding these concepts. 👉 Read the full paper: https://lnkd.in/eYmbYiu6
