🗞️ BENCHMARK LABS FEATURED WITH HUB PARTNER NYCEDC IN FINANCIAL TIMES 🗞️ 🚀 We’ve got some exciting news! Benchmark Labs Inc., a company from our inaugural Accelerator cohort, is featured in Financial Times 📰 alongside our Hub program partner, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC)! Our Accelerator was also highlighted as the key connector between Benchmark Labs and NYCEDC—demonstrating the power of collaborative innovation and public-private partnership 🤝. The article spotlights the work taking place at Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT), a 60-acre industrial campus on the South Brooklyn waterfront 🌊, where Benchmark Labs is piloting its technology through the Pilots at BAT initiative. There is mention of the offshore wind sector’s pivotal role in powering New York’s clean energy future, along with the efforts of Hub partner, Equinor, and other major offshore wind companies to help realize its estimated $70 billion impact on supply chain growth. It also highlights Benchmark Labs’ contributions in supporting New York's offshore wind industry as they work toward that vision. Pilots at BAT will also be home to NYCEDC’s Climate Innovation Hub—an initiative backed by $100 million in city funding 💸 to accelerate the growth of climate tech companies through business development, incubation, research, and commercialization. The goal: to scale transformative technologies that create local jobs, power the green economy, and cement NYC’s role as a global hub for climate innovation 🌍. 💬A few words from the collaborators: “We're trying to cultivate the growth of climate tech and other strategic sectors, to have a fully functioning synergistic ecosystem to meet our clean energy targets by 2040, as well as meet our economic development goals. It’s about becoming the best-in-class hub for climate innovation on a global level.” — Sam Jung, Vice President, Renewable Energy Industry Development at NYCEDC “It’s very difficult to build these relationships, and it takes a long time to win contracts…So being able to meet folks in the EDC is such a critical step because it enables us to know who our buyer is and where we should focus on building the relationship.” - Ulrik Soderstrom, Co-Founder and CSOO at Benchmark Labs 🗞️ Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ejQSUa42 #offshorewind #cleanenergy #renewable #windpower #sustainableenergy #innovation #startup #entrepreneurship #community  #NYC #NYUTandonMade #UFLInnovatesForClimate

  • See you in the finals! Help us bring better forecasting technology to #NY’s #agricultural sector.

  • We support the discussion about #AI and welcome the well-intended initiatives to move the conversation forward. But first, policymakers need to get a clear understanding of what #Frontier #AI models are and are not, what they can and can't do, their current state of development, and more importantly get a clear definition of AI for purposes of the law. Unfortunately, some initiatives seem to include definitions that could cover a good percentage of the software currently in use. Let's take a look at this definition by parts: a) an Engineered or machine-based system (e.g. products of #software or #hardware engineers -> software and hardware systems) b) that varies in its level of #autonomy ( - pretty vague, autonomous, semi-autonomous, non-autonomous systems?) c) and that can for explicit or implicit objectives infer from the input it receives how to generate outputs (- at this point a simple linear regression is covered -) d) ...that can #influence #physical or #virtual #environments (e.g. your #irrigation controllers and #sprinklers, #AC and #Roomba arguably influence physical environments - while a macro in #MS Excel can change you #virtual/ #computer environment). So when you read this definition on a bill that -in theory- is tackling only #frontier AI models, that in the words of the author "do not exist today", it is puzzling that they opted for a definition that is so vague, and that could affect #millions of products, customers and #small, #medium and #large #businesses.

Found this definition of #AI in a #California bill to regulate AI: “(b) “Artificial intelligence” means an engineered or machine-based system that varies in its level of autonomy and that can, for explicit or implicit objectives infer from the input it receives how to generate outputs that can influence physical or virtual environments.” I can’t imagine that after consulting with #industry, #academia and companies across the state, this was the consensus definition. It sounds like AC systems fit the bill LOL

  • We should #all be part of this debate. The future of #AI as a technology and its potential applications to society is being actively discussed across #california, #DC and many other states.

Recently I had the opportunity to talk at California State Assembly opposing the #SB1047 #AI bill trying to regulate frontier models. I felt fortunate to have my voice heard and felt that it was an important step towards drafting legislation that hears the concerns of #small-businesses. Some of you know about my concerns about the 100M USD #training cost cap, the #definition of AI for that bill, and other gray areas like: what are training costs for the purpose of the bill - data gathering, data cleaning, labor used creating the code, electricity, hardware purchase and depreciation, etc.?. Other important aspects include that 100M investments in training do not guarantee that a given AI model would be a "#frontiermodel", as training costs vary widely with cost of #labor and #electricity - and both are cheaper outside of #California. On the other hand, representing Benchmark Labs Inc. an AI Company at the forefront of AI based #weather forecasting, the aspect of making AI companies liable for the misuse of their models' output, is deeply troublesome, as not NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration or other weather information providers are liable for the potential misuse of their information. Consider this very real use case: #farmers, #land managers, #energy companies can make better asset management decisions based on #future weather conditions; however, a bad actor with the same information might decide when is a good time to start a #wildfire, or spread airborne contaminants. - History fact: Weather forecasts aided the allies during D-Day-. How would a weather forecasting company be responsible for the bad actor's actions just because it uses AI, while non-AI companies and institutions are not? We already have #anti-terrorism legislation, why would we, as a society, be going after #core-technologies based in #math and #science instead of targeting the crime instead?
