Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe room was slightly small with little to no ventilation, which left the room hot and musty at times. Plus the ceiling was low if you’re above 5’9.
Communal dinner was amazing, felt like we experienced Japanese culture.

IrelandThe only remark would be that the bedrooms were quite warm, but this is of course subjective (I like to sleep with colder air).
All the staff was very friendly and welcoming. The rooms were unique, comfortable and clean. I'd definitely recommend joining the dinner in the Irori, it was delicious and a great way to connect with other guests. The staff also kindly kept our luggage pre and post check-in so that we could explore the town and go for our hike without worrying about our luggage.

AustraliaThey have bbq dinner for a few guests every night and the whole place smells like fish. You can’t use the common area or the bar because of the dinner and the smoke. Even the shower area stinks. It’s a shame because everything else is great.
Staff were super friendly, very casual atmosphere and location is excellent. Easy access to everything.

Everyone was really nice, super inviting and helpful dinner was good too. Location is right next to the Open air museum but some of the more used bus stops can a small walk away.

United KingdomExceptional place to stay, close to the mountains and easy access to the ropeway to access Mt Fuji/Lake Ashi. Staff were friendly and attentive. Dinner with the other guests was well worth it for a pleasant evening while we were there.

BelgiumWe spend one night here & it was one of our best stays in Japan. We had a very nice dinner at the fireplace and the personnel was super friendly and gave us good tips on what to visit in Hakone. After 4 short nights in Tokyo we slept really well in the Japanese styled rooms!

KazakhstanThe food they offer is not worth of money they ask for it. But in the evening it’s difficult to find a place to eat in Hakone, so maybe for someone it can be the option.
Very good location, comfortable conditions.

GermanyBe aware that futons are not the most comfy beds (especially if you are a bit bigger and heavier (I´m 1,90m and 100kg)). But that is something you should expect.
The Guest House is exactly what you´d expect. Its clean, beautiful and the staff is freindly. I´d recommend it to everyone who would like to have a tradional japanese experience. The location is also quite good cause there are bus and train stations easily reachable by foot. Its also quite and you have a nice view.

United StatesThe only minor thing I can think of is that the shared dorm can get a little noisy in the morning, but that’s to be expected in a shared dorm. But quieter than most dorms I’ve stayed in!
The staff was super friendly and made the entire experience amazing. The dinner was great and the entire vibe of the place was amazing. Everything was super clean too. And it’s a phenomenal location right by the Open Air Museum and a short distance from Gora. I was only here for 1 night and I loved it!

AustraliaI prefer a softer bed and didn't find the futons in the traditional mat rooms comfortable - but that would apply to any traditional accommodation, and it was still a great experience to try.
The shared dinner was a fantastic experience - highly recommend, great value and a nice wind-down from the day. The location is super close to the train station, an easy walk from the local bus, and right next door to the art museum. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the design of the property's shared spaces was cool.
