Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaThe room and bathroom can be updated. Even a historical building can be updated in style.
Great location near English Bay. Room a bit dated but in good size. It is a historical building so the dated room is meant to be.

United StatesWe learned that the King rooms face the water for views of English bay. We chose a Queen room, and most of those face the city views. The beautiful Ivy on the walls of the hotel evidently obscure the views in the summer when the leaves are out fully.
We liked the charm of a hotel originally built in 1912, and now on the national historic register. Old world charm is still very present. The location, in a residential district, but a short 1-2 block walk to great restaurants on Denman, and on the shore of English Bay make this a great historic, comfortable stay. We will always stay at the Sylvia when we travel to Vancouver. Don't miss breakfast in the restaurant!

CanadaStayed at hotel and ate a big meal at restaurant but then was expected to buy more food/drinks in order to sit in lounge and watch the live music.
Lovely big bedroom, comfy beds, very clean, delicious food at restaurant, wonderful walks along waterfront, fabulous False Creek ferry ride.

CanadaA bit of renovation noise and walls can be a bit thin, but it’s a lovely old building that comes with quirks. Bed was a bit hard and bathroom could use an update (with faucets that reached the sink properly) but these are small things when you get to stay in a piece of history.
Loved this historic landmark hotel. You can’t beat the location near the beach and also near tons great restaurants. Staff are fantastic and the price in the rainy season was great. We enjoyed happy hour in the lounge watching the sun go down over the bay.

CanadaAt lease one bathroom could be converted to have a walk in shower. The service in the bar was slow, also the restaurant.
Room spacious and comfortable. Bathroom set up with a grab bar to help getting in and out of the bath. Front desk staff very helpful. Wonderful views of English Bay from the bar and restaurant. Room service excellent

CanadaI had a wonderful stay here. They had upgraded me to a room on the second floor facing English Bay beach which was so great. I didn’t expect the room to be spacious as shown in pictures but the king size room exceeded my expectations. The big windows were awesome and it was nice to actually open the windows and let fresh air in. Bed and pillows were comfy. I had dinner in the hotel and food was good. Loved that it was just steps away from the beach.

CanadaI wish there was a few more things available in room like coffee or free water or coffee in the lobby? That would be a nice touch. Finding parking was a bit of a nightmare. It was rather expensive per day.
The history and restoration of the building was magnificent. It was a beautiful hotel and a perfect location.

CanadaNo critique!
We appreciate the proximity to Stanley Park and the view of English Bay. We liked the age and history of the building. The hotel, although very old, has been maintained and restored to comfortable standards. And the restaurant is not to be missed. We loved our stay! Thank you to all staff. We felt very welcomed and cared for.

Room decor outdated and tired. The recycling containers on the floor were tripping hazard. Small fresh milk in fridge would be a nice choice for coffee/tea rather than coffee mate. Loved the location. The view from the bar is perfect.

CanadaThe staff at the Sylvia is what makes this hotel so exceptional. Every single member of the staff seems to love their job, and love going the extra mile to make guests stay feel special. Just wonderful people that are proud of this Vancouver institution! The hotel is old, the rooms are old, but very comfortable, spacious and spotlessly clean. The location can’t be beat, so close to wonderful restaurants and bars, shopping and a wonderful neighborhood on the edge of Stanley park. The restaurant and bar is superb, great food, fabulous specialty cocktails overlooking English Bay. Do yourself a favor and stay here!
