Le Couvent des Minimes, un Hôtel & Spa L'Occitane en Provence

Located in a former convent in Mane, built in 1613, Le Couvent des Minimes, un Hôtel & Spa L'Occitane en Provence RELAIS & CHATEAUX has a facade and a terraced garden with botanical plants.

The hotel is a wonderful conversion of the ancient convent. It is clear that mountains of money, but also tons of taste, were expended in achieving it. The result is sublime: like living in a beautiful château, except comfortable. As for the spa, it is superb, the best we’ve seen (and we’ve seen a few). It would impress a Roman emperor (if there were more slaves). We didn’t benefit from the huge outdoor pool or the terraces, since we were there in winter, but they would be a delight in warm weather. Someone has done a terrific job in assembling and training a rather young staff of charming and intelligent people. From the parking attendants to the receptionists, and from the waiters and waitresses to the exceptional sommelière (Ms. Pauline), there wasn't a one that we wouldn’t happily adopt and take home with us. The buffet breakfast: simply the best (really). The hotel has its own full-time boulanger, as well as a pastry chef. Okay, full disclosure: the coffee could be better. There is (of course) a gourmet restaurant (we can all imagine what that’s like), as well as a “bistro" on the premises. (Fortunately, since the local village doesn’t offer much at all.) The bistro serves mainly fanciful haute cuisine; we would have preferred that it be more authentically bistro-like, with some classic bistro-type food (steaks, daubes, foie gras, magret, confit de canard…yes, maybe even french fries!). It goes to show: even paradise can stand to be tweaked a bit.

Le Crillon, located in the charming village of Murs offers tranquility, comfort, and a genuine sense of what life would be living as a resident in the Provence. Our room was lovely, and we enjoyed relaxing in our private terrace outside our room. Breakfasts were wonderful as were lunches, and dinners were outstanding. The owner and staff were friendly, helpful, and highly professional. It is a gem.

We were three women hiking through Provence. When we arrived, we were met by staff as if they were waiting for us. She offered us drinks at the pool which she served expertly. Our room was explained very clearly as well as all hotel and dining amenities. We felt very welcome and comfortable during our two night stay. We loved our excellent dinner, drinks and daily breakfasts. Our room was superb and we hated to leave. Lovely property.

Perfect place to explore Provence, it's right in the middle.

Perfect place to explore Provence, it's right in the middle. In the town you will find the basics: supermarket, some restaurants, others. The old towncenter is nice, and late afternoon (not on marketday) we found good parking facilities. Tip: google maps doesn't know that some streets in the old town are closed and it navigates inside impossible places. It's better to park next to the river and walk 3 minutes to the center.

Pertuis is an unglamorous, normal, quite large village located not far from interstate A51, the vertical highway that divides the eastern and western halves of inland Provence. From Pertuis, it was easy to get to both our westernmost destinations (i.e., Avignon) and our easternmost destinations (i.e., the Gorges du Verdon), as well as to Aix-en-Provence to the south, yet the village was completely non-touristy. I would definitely stay there again.

Mane is fully equipped in spite of the fact it is very close to Forcalquier. The small town has a superb bio grocery store (central square), a butcher, a post office, etc. There is nearby the Salagon museum (former monastery). I didn't have a car, and I walked around for the ten days I was there. The more I walked, the more I discovered walk paths all around.

It’s a charming french village. The best croissant aux amandes, best croq monsieur (a french version of ham and cheese sandwich), best ice cream. I have tried the lavande and the framboise flavors. Excellent! And a bonus surprise: I discovered a barista shop, for coffee lovers! The best double expresso I ever had! I am from Brazil and I drink coffee everyday. The best of the best was in Forcalquier. A hidden gem!
