Too bad the beach is half a mile away from our rented condo. This property is listed as "beachfront". We enjoyed the West end beach and the beach by the fort as it was just a short walk to the beachfront. We had fun swimming and tanning at these 2 beaches. The Island is very clean. Very quiet and not a lot of people which we loved. We didn’t explore the island mainly stayed on the beach. It is a long walk from condo to beach especially with toddlers. The island was wonderful, but we were met with a surprising ordinance that dampened our stay. You cannot use metal detectors, (we are amateurs and just purchased a few for the trip) On our second day, at the west end, we were approached and told that metal detecting was not allowed on the island. Look, we enjoyed the trip immensely but this item was quite surprising as I believe this could be viewed as an enjoyable activity for those making the trip only to find out it is not allowed. To close, we are looking to visit again very soon, its just that when I reflect on what could be better, this comes to me as opportunity. The beaches were nice and relaxed.
The beaches were nice and relaxed. Loved that they were mostly dog friendly and others were respectful. The little aquarium was fun. Didn't like the views of the offshore oil rigs and the water was murky at the gulf facing beaches. Restaurants were weak. Mosquitos were out of control, we got eaten alive from dusk to dawn. The beach is very nice and more private than others which is why we come here. We’ve been there many times. I do think there is a need for more restaurants. And perhaps grocery store closer!
