FAQs about hotels in Phnom Penh

Cambodia's Colorful Capital

Cambodia has successfully dusted itself off from the ravages of war with its colourful capital of Phnom Penh rising from the ashes and sparkling once more. This fascinating city, on the banks of the Mekong River, features exotic markets, cultural jewels and is home to some of the friendliest people on earth.

A visit to the National Museum captures a slice of Cambodia’s ancient Khmer history and art. A different and more recent history suffocates and overwhelms visitors to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former prison of the Khmer Rouge, and The Killing Fields are a short drive from the capital.

The Royal Palace is a striking centrepiece in the centre of Phnom Penh, and is home to the Emerald Buddha and Silver Pagoda. Not far away is the Cambodian Independence Monument that celebrates Cambodia’s sovereignty.

You can satisfy your hunger pains with delicious French-Indochina-inspired meals at various street stalls or classy restaurants. The riverside area has the Art Deco Central Market for a great bargain and there are a variety of bars, especially near Sisowath Quay.

Take time to walk around the French colonial streets with its mix of slow-moving monks and speedy motorbikes. Booking.com has many hotels located in Daun Penh and Chamkar Mon districts, amongst others.

I’ve spent about 10 days total in the city.

I’ve spent about 10 days total in the city. It’s just a big Asian city. Traffic is bad and it’s over crowded. Siem reap is much more my style, low traffic and more relaxed. I don’t think I’m permitted to say where to eat in Siem Reap as I own the place. So conflict of issues haha.

I liked the people, the Phnom Penh Museum, and the Royal Palace. We were there on the Queen Mother's birthday, and there was a beautiful fireworks celebration—it was truly wonderful. Our stay in Phnom Penh was short but memorable. I wanted to walk around to explore the local shopping and culture, but I couldn’t make it to the Russian Market. Overall, it’s a very charming city.

Like so many big cities in the world it is too busy and polluted. It is difficult to go from one place to another, whether in a tuktuk or walking. Even if you book a tuktuk through an app, you need to watch where the driver is going carefully. Phnom Penh is a place to shop (but the malls are very expensive), to eat - there are many restaurants and street food (if your stomach can take it); now they made 'Chaktomuk Walk Street; along the river, which is closed to traffic at the weekend, and full of stalls, mainly selling food. This street is invariably crowded with Cambodian families, and some foreigners. The museum in Phnom Penh is very well-worth visiting, very well-resented and airy. The palace is also worth seeing, although they only allow you to look in some rooms from the doorway (no photos allowed there). If you are a tourist, not vebturing outside the capital, three days would be suffiicient.

nearly impossible to walk around, no footpath, polluted, traffic jams, noise, cars on the footpath motobikes driving everywhere. You need to be rich, drive by taxi or with soundproof air conditionned chauffeured car, then there are some good-expensive restaurants, nice monuments and a sleazy nightlife for those who like it.

    I loved Phnom Penh.

I loved Phnom Penh. The city is a narrow strip on the river but it feels super villagey which gives it charm and has lots of green and quiet places away from the hustle and bustle. The people make it though - so friendly and kind

Big spacious rooms, good shower/bath with consistent hot water (the best we have had on our travels through south east Asia). Delicious breakfast with excellent choices. We had an issue with the window on our first stay and the staff were very responsive and resolved the issue within half an hour. Staff were friendly and helpful. We stayed at the hotel twice during our stay in Cambodia - we couldn’t fault it.

Clean, spacious room with interesting view. Good AC and comfortable bed. Very kind and helpful Staff. Great breakfast with Asian and continental selection of food. Our best breakfast in Cambodia so far. Also they have very good restaurant with reasonable prices. We rented scooter from the hotel and it was good. Staff close the motorbikes in the garage for the night.
