The Lily of the Lake
Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.
A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.
More legends envelop the Ring of Kerry – a scenic drive starting from Killarney and supposedly the last place to spot a leprechaun. Gushing Torc waterfall is just one of its fantastic sights.
In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior. The local gaelic football team play at Fitzgerald Stadium, and more sports can be enjoyed at Killarney riding stables and the nearby golf and fishing club. There is also a popular racecourse.

I would have loved to stay longer and really soak up the Ring of Kerry. I highly recommend the Gap of Dunloe—our hike was like a dream. I would say getting around is quite easy, and we liked the restaurant right in the Gap of Dunloe parking lot, Kate Kearney’s Cottage. Friendly, lots to do and see and central for Ring of Kerry. If driving Ring of Kerry note Buses drive anti-clockwise and if driving yourself (unless you go very early) it’s advisable to do likewise! Obviously a very touristy town, most of the town appears to be made up of hotels and BnBs. However because of it it also has a wide range of restaurants and cafes featuring a wide range of cuisines. Being there on a Saturday night it also appeared to have a thriving nightlife. Being there in Summer meant that Murphys Icecream was still open at 11PM. I ate at Mizus - a wonderful Japanese restaurant with tremendous work gone into the decor and food that matched. Breakfast at Zone was very busy on a wet morning and full of families - always a good sign for me, food and coffee was lovely. I stayed in middle of town and walked out to the INEC for a gig - about 25 mins on a nice evening but also seemed to be plenty of taxis flying around.
