FAQs about hotels in Oban

Gateway to the Inner Hebrides

Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.

The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.

Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.

Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.

As the capital of North Argyll, Oban has a great selection of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs available on Booking.com.

Oban is a great place to visit, whether for a short stay, a base from which to travel or for the ferry terminal if you are planning an island trip. It has a wonderful beach just outside the town, and has managed to keep its retail necessities (supermarkets, DIY stores etc) out of sight but still pretty close. Accommodation is plentiful and varied - hotels, guest houses etc, and there are plenty of cafes and fresh food outlets, sea food being a speciality, not surprisingly. It has some really good retailers (although a fair few that are less so), a wonderful gallery, a deservedly famous distillery, and a few excellent restaurants (Coast is a particular favourite). Its a very attractive place to look at and to walk around, particularly if you venture away from the seafront, around a town that has evident history. I wouldn't choose to spend more than a couple of days based there, at any one time but I would choose it as a familiar and enjoyable stopping-off point on the way to other places. The sunset over the bay is magical.

Oban is a generally a good place for visiting - it has a harbour and restaurants round the bay. Weather can be variable, but it is Scotland! Don't expect continental levels of convenience though - outside seating areas in pubs close at 10pm, some cafes are closed on Monday and public toilets were also closed.

    We love visiting Oban.

We love visiting Oban. However for a short break it's hard to fit everything in. We traveled up on Fri eve and back on Sun afternoon. We had a day trip to Iona booked 10am-6 and a fabulous meal out on Sat eve. But this meant our wander round Oban town was on Sunday and sadly all the independant small galleries and studio shops were shut which was disappointing as we like to support local business. The weather was exceptionally good but the outdoor beer gardens and terraces were shut at 10pm where we had to then cram inside. I left my phone on the bus in Mull and the staff in the CalMac port office and in Craignure could not have been more helpful and I had it returned to me by 11am on Sunday. The farmers and craft market on Sunday morning in Corran hall was a great find and well worth the visit, picked up some nice jewellery and delicious quick and sausage rolls for a picnic up in Mchaigs tower. Overall areally grwat weekend.

Oban is delightful, holds very dear memories for me and my family, great shops, charity shops are a hive of bargains, Highland Soap Company, excellent products, you get what you pay for, the shampoo bars are devine, we went on Caledonian Macbrayne ferry to Craignure for a trip to Duart Castle (there is a tune out there named Duart Castle which I play on the accordion). The ferry to Oban, bus to Duart Castle and return. Went so smoothly, excellent, got my cardio & steps in, lots of walking and stairs.. Very glad of evening meal at Wetherspoons, very busy but very efficient and welcome. Young man driving bus was great, local man who is brilliant character and such a pleasure to meet. A holiday trip very much enjoyed. Thoroughly enjoyed Oban and its fayre..

Oban Bay Hotel exceeded all expectations. Beautiful, comfortable surroundings- elegantly Scottish without being tacky in any way. Whole place smelt amazing too - noticed as soon as we stepped in. The room was lovely - some beautiful extra touches and I liked the use of quality Scottish toiletries and products. The staff were an absolute delight in their entirety - nothing was a bother. Food absolutely delicious, had dinner in the conservatory looking out on the water and best breakfast menu I’ve seen in a long time. Will be back with haste !

We had a lovely stay in their Woodland room which is located at the back of the hotel, so is nice and quiet with a view of the trees. The room was decorated to a high standard and the amenities were great! The hotel itself was very tastefully decorated and the bar area was cosy with a stunning view over the water. Breakfast was brilliant! Really delicious fresh ingredients and the staff were very attentive. We ate dinner in the hotel and would highly recommend also. We’ll definitely be coming back if passing through Oban! Thanks :)

View from the front of the hotel on to the lake was fantastic. Food was excellent. Staff were very patient with my nervy (and loud) dog. The interior of the reception etc. was absolutely superb.

This hotel was once a splendid old hotel and its location is excellent, right in central Oban. It has seen many better days. Carpets on the stairs are worn, the entrance is dark but the price including breakfast is very good, the bed is comfortable and the bathroom clean.
