An HCL Cloud Native Labs Perspective on Application Moderisation
HCL
An established enterprise will make the vast majority of its revenue using existing systems. So, it makes perfect sense to spend 95% of the IT budget on maintaining those systems, leaving as little as 5% to invest in new technology and innovation. Therefore, the emphasis of enterprises is often a lot more towards how to modernise the existing estate rather than building greenfield applications as there may be in a start-up. Therefore, the emphasis of enterprises is often a lot more towards how to modernise the existing estate rather than building greenfield applications as there may be in a start-up. This approach makes sense as going faster, saving money or doing more can all apply to existing applications.
The journey to application modernization is simpler said than done. It’s not an easy task to optimize the performance for an array of internal and external applications, especially when there’s a mixture of cloud and legacy workloads that connect and intersect. In this whitepaper, HCL Cloud Natives Labs is sharing their perspective on application modernization and looks at three specific software development patterns to modernize existing applications. -

In 2014 I started a campus Meetup group aimed at bringing software developers together to learn about tools, techniques and technologies and to raise the profile and sustainability of software development. In late 2015 this was adopted as the EMBL-EBI Technical Seminars Programme with its own budget and now has over 400 members. I have been supported in organising talks and workshops from leaders in the software industry and enable collaboration amongst developers across campus by creating communities of practice. As collaboration has increased common needs have been identified, and we increasingly seek to focus on sharing the knowledge and expertise we have across the organisation.

Mandarin in Bath
Founder
-I was keen to learn Mandarin in a group but there were no classes in Bath. I hired a teacher, a venue and created my own. This proved very popular and over the year or so it was running taught over 100 students at three different levels. Later we also organised courses in calligraphy and Chinese business practice.
