Introducing: The Book of Money 🎉 We've been doing this banking thing for ten years now, and in that time we've picked up a thing or two about money. So we thought it was time to share what we've learned in a personal finance book for people who wouldn’t normally read one. With absolutely no judgement or jargon, The Book of Money breaks down big, complex topics into bite-sized chunks. It's coming this September, published by Penguin Random House UK & Century Publishing. And our share of the profits will go to charity (more on that soon!) THINGS THAT ARE COMING HOME: - something completely random from the middle of Lidl - a branded pint glass from the pub - half a Colin the Caterpillar that someone brought into the office - an Ikea lampshade with a name you can't pronounce - swag from the secret office supply - 5 pens, 3 notebooks and 15 different packets of notepads from the stationery cupboard - a tiny succulent from the garden centre that you fully intend to keep alive but also know full well will be dead in a month - football (again)

Hey everyone, it’s Eleni Pavlović here from the Hiring team at Monzo 👋 Just popping in to chat about the Tech Insights Day we hosted last week with GoodWork. GoodWork are a great charity who support young people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds with training, so they can get fairer access to equal employment opportunities. We were so excited to host them as part of our commitment to support underrepresented communities, and to showcase what a career in tech could look like for folks who may not have had much exposure to people working in tech roles or in non-tech roles in tech companies. Here’s how the day went 👇 9:15am: Myself and a group of Monzonaut volunteers arrived at our Event Space in our London office to start setting up for the event. Folks from the GoodWork programme started arriving, as well as our cohort of Engineering summer interns who also took part in the day. Lots of chatting and networking, as you can imagine… 10am - 11:30am: We had Monzonaut speakers join us to give talks about their career journeys. We heard from folks in our Data, Product, and QA disciplines. This helped the attendees to see what careers in tech look like and how they can get into those roles if they want to explore those career paths 🙌 11:30am - 12pm: After the talks, everyone split into break out groups and we had a panel of volunteers join us to do ‘career speed dating’. They spent five minutes with each group where our young people were able to ask them 1:1 questions about Monzo and their career journeys so far. 12pm - 1pm: Time for lunch. We had a delivery of pizzas to enjoy over lunch and a (surprise!) delivery of some spring rolls. An unexpected (but delicious) combo 🍕 1pm - 4pm: Hackathon time! Monzonauts from our Engineering, Data, Marketing, and Finance disciplines joined us to lead Hackathon project groups. The attendees and volunteers created ideas for innovative financial products, then pitching their product ideas to the ‘Hot Chip Den’, judged by a panel of Monzonauts. The winning team ‘Budget Buddy 2’ won some Monzo swag for their pitch 😎 4pm - 4:30pm: Financial Literacy session. For most young people joining their first job, no one explains how to read your payslip, or your first employment contract. Two Monzonauts from our People team joined to share some educational tips and how-to’s for folks going into their first job 💷 4:30pm - Wrap up for the day! While hiring for our Engineering teams at Monzo is the main focus of my day-to-day, having the opportunity to spend a day partnering with GoodWork and hosting events like this is one of the highlights of my role 🩷 Hopefully we’ll host more events like this in future! See you all soon, and head to @GoodWork to check out more of what they do.

WHY WE WROTE THE BOOK OF MONEY: - to help people understand their finances better - to show off everything we’ve picked up over the last 10 years (it’s a lot) - to be able to tell our mums that we wrote a book - to try and make money less scary and more manageable - to get rid of the stigma that only finance bros know about money - to help equip whoever reads it with some valuable tools that can change their relationship to money - to get back at Greg (he knows why)
