We're committed to solving intelligence, to advance science and benefit humanity.

About us

We’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority. Our long term aim is to solve intelligence, developing more general and capable problem-solving systems, known as artificial general intelligence (AGI). Guided by safety and ethics, this invention could help society find answers to some of the world’s most pressing and fundamental scientific challenges. We have a track record of breakthroughs in fundamental AI research, published in journals like Nature, Science, and more. Our programs have learned to diagnose eye diseases as effectively as the world’s top doctors, to save 30% of the energy used to keep data centres cool, and to predict the complex 3D shapes of proteins - which could one day transform how drugs are invented.

Our first episode of AI in Motion just dropped, and we’re talking about the future of robots and how they interact with the physical world. And what better place to talk about it than in the back seat of our robot, Waymo? Carolina Parada tells us what Google DeepMind is developing and when you might get a robot that folds your laundry. • We’re introducing SIMA 2, the next major milestone in general and helpful embodied AI agents. 👾 With Gemini integrated at its core, it moves beyond following basic instructions to think, learn, and collaborate in complex, 3D worlds. 🔵 Advanced reasoning: It can accomplish high-level goals in a wide array of games – describing its intentions, explaining what it sees, and outlining the steps its taking. 🔵 Improved generalization: It can transfer concepts like “mining” in one game and apply it to “harvesting” in another - connecting the dots between similar tasks. 🔵 Self-improvement: Through trial-and-error and Gemini-based feedback, it can teach itself entirely new skills in unseen worlds without additional human input. 🔵 Adaptability: When tested in simulated 3D worlds created with our Genie 3 world model, it demonstrates unprecedented adaptability by navigating its surroundings, following instructions, and taking meaningful steps towards goals.  This research offers a strong path toward applications in robotics and another step towards AGI in the physical world. • Our friends at Waymo have simulated billions of miles of driving, across countless types of scenarios and weather conditions – from harsh sun to intense snow. ❄️ By learning from those experiences, in addition to real-world driving, Waymo’s AI is ready for any rare, complex events. Hear the deep dive with Hannah Fry and Waymo's Distinguished Engineer Vincent Vanhoucke, on our podcast → https://goo.gle/4oys90c

  • We built an interactive demo called Space DJ that lets you fly through a 3D constellation of music – powered by our Lyria RealTime model. 🎶 Each star represents a different music genre. As you pilot your ship, your path is translated into prompts for the API, creating a continuously evolving soundtrack. The model is now on Google AI Studio to help developers build apps for people to interactively create and perform instrumental music. Try it now and learn more: https://lnkd.in/ekjCaZmp

  • Together with Google Research, we’ve developed three AI technologies to help support and protect nature. ⤵️ 🌲 We’re releasing a paper and dataset dedicated to training deep-learning models to predict tropical deforestation risk. 🐨 We’re developing a new AI-powered approach for inferring species maps at scale, to help conserve the planet’s endangered species. 🦜We’ve upgraded our bioacoustic model Perch to Perch 2.0. It can detect 15,000 species out of the box and learn to identify sounds it has never heard before - like whales and dolphins - from just a few examples. We’re excited to share these AI tools with researchers, nonprofits, and intergovernmental agencies, in the hope that we can help preserve the biosphere for future generations of plants, animals, and people. Building creative agents @GoogleDeepMind. AlphaProof, AlphaZero_db, PuzzleGen, Convex RL, meta gradients. Staff research scientist, discovery team

I am excited to share a work we did in the Discovery team at Google DeepMind using RL and generative models to discover creative chess puzzles 🔊♟️♟️ NeurIPS 🎨While strong chess players intuitively recognize the beauty of a position, articulating the precise elements that constitute creativity remains elusive. To address this, we pre-trained generative models on public datasets and then applied reinforcement learning, using novel rewards designed for uniqueness, counter-intuitiveness, realism, and novelty. This approach doubled the number of novel chess puzzles compared to the original training data, while successfully maintaining aesthetic diversity. Three distinguished experts—International Master of chess compositions Amatzia Avni (author of "Creative Chess"), Grandmaster Jonathan Levitt @JonathanLevitt7 (author of "Secrets of Spectacular Chess"), and Grandmaster Matthew Sadler @gmmds (author of "Game Changer")—evaluated and selected the puzzles they found most compelling. Their preference was for puzzles exhibiting original, paradoxical, surprising, and naturally occurring positions, with particular emphasis on those that integrated aesthetic themes in innovative ways and demonstrated exceptional over-the-board vision.
