Learn how to use Chat with Google Meet

With continuous meeting chat, you can send messages to meeting participants before, during and after a meeting in Google Chat. Continuous meeting chat is available to all Business and Enterprise users.

  • If continuous meeting chat is enabled: You can use additional Google Chat features such as text formatting, @mentions, and reactions. Your messages sync with Google Chat, and you can access the meeting chat before, during, and after the meeting.
    • If you're a guest from outside the host's organization, or not signed in, messages are only available while you are in the meeting. When the meeting ends, all your messages disappear.
  • If continuous meeting chat is disabled or not available: Messages are only available while you are in the call and disappear as soon as the meeting ends. Learn more about the chat experience with continuous meeting chat disabled.

If you join a meeting on the web:

  • Internal guests on the Google Calendar Invite: Your conversations are saved in your Chat conversations list and you can access the entire chat history of a meeting, even if you join late.
  • Internal guests who aren’t on the Calendar invite and guests from outside the host's organization: Your chat history disappears when the meeting ends and you can only access messages while you’re in the meeting.

If you join a meeting on a mobile device:

  • Internal guests on the Google Calendar invite: You’ll be directed to the Google Chat app or Gmail app to send or read a chat message in a Google Meet event. The conversation is saved in your Chat conversations list, and you can access the entire chat history of a meeting, even if you join late. You’ll also have access to all rich features like @mentions and reactions.
  • Internal guests who aren't on the Calendar invite and guests from outside the host's organization: Your chat history disappears when the meeting ends, and you can only access messages that are sent during the time you're in the meeting. However, internal guests who were included on the Calendar invite will be able to view chats sent during the meeting, even after the meeting.

Start a new Meeting Conversation

A Meeting Conversation can be created by selecting “Chat with Guests” from a Calendar invite, accessing the group chat within your Chat list of conversations, or by sending the first message using the embedded chat in Meet.

For recurring events in Calendar, a separate Meeting Conversation is created for each individual instance and is located under the “Direct Messages” section of your Chat conversations list.

The Meeting Conversation name will combine the event name and date. For example, "Sales Team Weekly - Nov 8" and "Sales Team Weekly - Nov 15.” The date in the title uses the format and language of your current language settings in your account. Learn more about how to change your language on the web.

Important:

  • External guests invited to a meeting via the "Chat with Guests" feature in Calendar aren’t automatically added to the Meeting Conversation.
  • A new Meeting Conversation won’t be created or displayed in your Chat conversations list if no message is sent before or during the meeting.
  • Meeting Conversations have the same retention policies as Google Chat spaces. Learn about message history for conversations with work or school accounts.
  • External guests will only have access to the chat during the time they are in the meeting. They will not see the conversation history from before or after they join. Internal attendees will see clear 'external' indicators and banners when guests are present in the conversation. There will be an external warning in the header of chat and a compose warning.

Learn how continuous meeting chat works if you're outside the host's organization or not on the calendar invite

When a meeting starts, messages sent in Google Chat are visible to all participants in the meeting. When the Google Meet call starts, a banner is displayed in Google Chat to notify users that the meeting associated with this chat is in-progress.

If you’re not part of the hosts organization, not signed in, or not on the calendar invite for the meeting, you can only:

  • Send messages to other participants while you’re in the meeting
  • Read messages sent by other participants after you join the meeting

Additionally, when an external user joins the Google Meet call, all internal users are notified and an “External” badge is visible at all times in Google Chat.

Important: Messages sent before you join the meeting won’t be visible to you and you won’t see any messages after the meeting ends. Some rich media messages, such as images, video files, or custom domain GIFs, sent by internal users may be unavailable for external participants to view.

Learn how the Calendar event guest list affects meeting chats

As the event organizer, you control if people invited to your event can view the guest list. When you turn off “See guest list,” it affects how your meeting chat works.

  • If you turn off "See guest list" before the meeting chat is created: "Chat with guests " isn’t available in the Calendar event for you or your guests.
  • If you turn off "See guest list" after the meeting chat is created:
    • The chat continues to exist in Google Chat for its members.
    • The guest list in the chat no longer syncs with the guest list in the event.
      • For example, if you remove someone from the guest list in the event, it does not remove them from the chat.
Prevent participants from sending chat messages in a video meeting

When continuous meeting chat is on, meeting hosts and organizers can stop participants from sending chat messages. Participants can still read the messages.
