What’s the current process?
Currently when developers participate in GitHub Sponsors, developers agree to our GitHub Sponsors Additional Terms. These terms describe the relationship and obligations between GitHub and the developer.
You can also participate in GitHub Sponsors as a funder. Funders participate in GitHub Sponsors by sponsoring projects funders depend on. Funders participation is different from developers participation. Currently when an organization participates in GitHub Sponsors they agree to a different set of terms than the developers, which cover the relationship and obligations between GitHub and the funder, the organization.
What’s changing and why?
To allow for a more streamlined process of signing up for GitHub Sponsors for both our developers and funders, we are combining our terms that developers agree to and the terms that funders agree to into a single set of terms. These updated terms for GitHub Sponsors will include in the relationship between GitHub and a developer (sponsoree) as well as GitHub and an organization (funder or sponsor).
For developers participating in GitHub Sponsors, there are no changes to the terms they agreed to with this update.
For organizations participating in GitHub Sponsors, we are making 2 changes. First, and in order to streamline the process, for organizations that are requesting to be invoiced a signed agreement will no longer be required to be invoiced. Second, and to reflect customer needs, we are changing the term length from 3 years to 1 year.
