About Colombia Independence Day 2025
This annual Doodle celebrates Independence Day in Colombia! On this day in 1810, citizens in Bogotá took to the streets in protest against Spanish rule. It became an official public holiday in 1872 and has since served as a reminder of Colombia’s freedom, achievements, and progress.
On Independence Day, Colombians attend lively celebrations across the country in cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cartagena, and more. Parades, cultural events, and national pride celebrations are very common on this holiday. Citizens stroll through the streets and visit food stalls serving traditional dishes like arepas (corn cakes) and bandeja paisa (a hearty platter of sausage, beef, rice, beans, and more). Many also dress in yellow, blue, and red clothing in honor of the national flag, like the one waving in today’s artwork.
