The Nile Group uses Google AI to scale the boutique bookstore experience for millions of readers.

Escaping the constraints of a manually managed platform

The Nile Group is one of Australia and New Zealand's pioneering online retail businesses, having served the region for over two decades with a mission to build the most trusted online bookstore. This involves translating the personal, curated shopping experience of a physical bookshop to a digital format, replicating the feeling of serendipitous discovery across an online catalog of millions of titles.

However, the company’s previous infrastructure stifled that vision. Its cloud provider at the time had stagnated, offering little more than basic virtual servers. This meant that any advanced data capabilities, like real-time analytics or large-scale processing, would have to be built and managed manually, a task that was time-consuming and costly for the team.

Seeking a mature technology partner that offered a rich ecosystem of managed services, The Nile Group made the strategic decision to migrate to Google Cloud in 2015. This gave the team a platform with advanced data capabilities and support for modern application development, all while offering a consistent and predictable user experience across its products. The goal was clear: Free the team to focus on building its vision for the future.

To bring its vision to life, The Nile Group needed a platform that provided powerful, managed services out of the box.

This is an old industry, but we are leveraging cutting-edge technology wherever we can to create a customer experience that is unparalleled.

Building a high-performance engine for data and scale

Migrating to Google Cloud allowed The Nile Group to replace the daily management of infrastructure with a powerful suite of managed services.

This began with Cloud SQL, which provides a primary database so reliable that its management is no longer a daily concern for the team. A recent major version upgrade, for example, was completed seamlessly in under half an hour. The company initially built its architecture on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and has since started migrating workloads to Cloud Run for its simplicity. This move made it far simpler to enhance website speed with localized servers in the US and AU.

If you think about this as a Formula One team, we were previously having to worry about fixing the road. That's no longer a consideration. Now we're entirely focused on how to make this car faster and more efficient.

With a reliable foundation in place, the team turned its attention to its data and commerce stack. Using BigQuery as its central business intelligence platform, The Nile Group powers dashboards for everything from supply chain and procurement to marketplace management and data enhancement, cutting the time to process massive supplier stock feeds from a full day to just 10 seconds by intelligently processing only the daily changes.

For its dynamic pricing system, the company uses Bigtable to ingest and process multiple, simultaneous data streams in real time. This includes constant updates on supplier stock levels, price changes from publishers who use dynamic pricing, and competitor data. In an approach the team likens to high-speed trading, the system processes up to 5,000 of these updates per second. Before this, processing delays meant some products were sold at a loss, while the real-time speed helps protect margins and reduce order cancellations.

Delivering the expert bookstore experience, at scale

With Google Cloud managing its foundational infrastructure, The Nile Group’s team was freed to focus on its most ambitious goal: replicating the nuanced knowledge of its expert book buyers across the entire catalog.

Using the Gemini models on Vertex AI, the company began automating tasks that were previously impossible. For example, with thousands of new books released every week, the team can now automatically reformat inconsistent, publisher-provided descriptions, making them clean and readable for customers. The team is also encoding the deep knowledge of its book buyers by having them create nuanced, descriptive tags like "Nordic Crime." Gemini then analyzes and applies these tags to millions of relevant books, allowing customers to discover titles in a specific, serendipitous way that mirrors an expert, in-person recommendation.

The word ‘enablement’ is the best word to describe our partnership with Google Cloud. It has enabled us to do the things that we wanted to do. Before, the answer was, 'No, we can't do that.' Now it usually is, 'Yes, we can.'

The decade-long partnership between The Nile Group and Google Cloud has been one of constant evolution. What began as a move to escape the constraints of a basic platform has since enabled the company to access capabilities that were once out of reach.
