With only 12% of Indonesians having regular access to dental services, FDC Dental set out to make modern, accessible dental care a reality for the entire population. But their vision and growth plans were hindered by manual, unscalable operational processes. 

The company's patient booking system, managed entirely through chat, became a major bottleneck. A team of agents working in shifts struggled to keep up with a digital queue that could swell to 2,000 requests, forcing patients to wait up to an hour for an appointment.

On the hiring front, to support its expansion from 30 to over 100 clinics, FDC needed to recruit hundreds of new staff, but the manual process of screening CVs — at five minutes per candidate — was too slow to meet demand.

To overcome these challenges, FDC Dental sought a strategic partner that could help them build a technology foundation that was highly scalable and cost-efficient, as well as flexible enough to create a personalized, human-centric experience.

Automating a scalable and hyper-localized patient experience with AI

To transform its operations, FDC Dental built an AI-powered platform on Google Cloud, architected on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) for scalability. 

The patient experience is driven by an intelligent booking system built on Vertex AI. A patient can now open a chat app, have a natural language conversation with an AI agent, select a clinic, and complete their down payment in just 15 seconds — a process that previously took up to an hour. In true customer-first spirit, the AI agents use Gemini models to personalize and adapt interactions to the diverse local languages and cultures across Indonesia.

Internally, the HR team can now screen hundreds of CVs in the time it previously took to screen just one, allowing them to keep pace with the company's fast-paced growth.

This entire platform runs on Cloud Run, whose serverless auto-scaling capabilities were a key requirement during the design process of their architecture. By automatically scaling resources — including CPU and memory — down to zero during off-hours, Cloud Run has cut infrastructure costs by 35%.
