Subject: dpkg should store a user comment per package
Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 22:01:34 +0100
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.10.28
Severity: wishlist

Hello,
I like to try out new stuff and install a lot of packages. When I want
to remove them I don't know why I installed a package and weather I can
remove it without damage.

I suggest that dpkg allows me to store a comment for each package when I
install it. For example "Suggested by package XY".
The front ends apt, dselect and aptitude could be extended that they fill
this comment with the package this package was installed for.
For example if I install KDE per apt-get kde all the 100 packages
installed with it will receive the comment "installed with KDE".

If I want to delete later KDE I can query each package and delete every
one that has this comment.

Thanks a lot for reading until here and listening to my wish.
Christian

From looking at other bugs, I'd suggest #340500 would be helpful to take
the form of tags for packages. At which point would be a blocking
feature for #490962.

I agree with the bug submitter, this would be a rather helpful feature.
