🚨Civil society file #DigitalServicesAct complaint against #X for targeting people with ads using their sensitive personal data 🚨 Yesterday, nine civil society organisations, including European Digital Rights, submitted a joint complaint against X for violating the #DSA by using people’s sensitive personal data for targeted ads 🧐 AI Forensics' research showed that X allowed major brands and public institutions to target people with online advertising based on especially sensitive personal data like political opinions, sexual orientation, religious beliefs and health conditions. This can lead to increased risk of discrimination, harm and violations of #FundamentalRights 🚫 Together, we are calling for Digital Services Coordinators and the European Commission to investigate X, and hold it to accountable ✊🏽 Read more about our complaint and AIF's research ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gssbX3gF 🩵 AI Forensics, Centre for Democracy & Technology Europe, Bits of Freedom, Fundacja Panoptykon, Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte e.V., Global Witness, Entropy, VoxPublic (association)

EDRi fights for your rights and freedoms online.
About us
European Digital Rights was founded in June 2002. Currently 45 privacy and civil rights organisations in 19 countries have EDRi membership. Members of European Digital Rights have joined forces to defend civil rights in the information society. The need for cooperation among organisations active in Europe is increasing as more regulation regarding the internet, copyright and privacy is originating from European institutions, or from international institutions with strong impact in Europe.

✉️ Earlier this week, 34 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament, Renew Europe, Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, and The Left in the European Parliament sent a letter to the European Commission, expressing grave concerns about the #Israel adequacy decision that allows the transfer of personal data with the European Union. 🗣️ They have joined the voices of many others calling attention to this issue. In June 2025, European Digital Rights, Access Now and 17 other civil society organisations sent a second open letter to the European Commission, urging it to urgently reassess Israel’s adequacy status under the General Data Protection Regulation #GDPR. Since the Commission reconfirmed Israel’s status in January 2024, the situation has only worsened: ⚠️ Escalating #HumanRights violations in Gaza and the West Bank ⚠️ Expanded #surveillance and biometric repression ⚠️ Legal reforms undermining #DataProtection oversight ⚠️ Ongoing data flows to Israeli firms with ties to security services ⚠️ Use of AI-driven targeting systems in a context where the International Court of Justice has found plausible genocide ⚠️ Application of Israeli law to occupied territories – in breach of the EU’s own policy 🚨 Maintaining Israel’s adequacy status without confronting these structural problems undermines EU's #DataProtection framework and risks entangling violations of international law. The Commission must heed the calls of multitude of voices, including EU lawmakers and civil society, and reassess Israel's adequacy status ✊🏽 📄 Read the civil society letter ➡️ https://lnkd.in/giTu5g_S 📄 Read the MEPs letter ⤵️

💪🏽 European Commission must champion the #AIAct amidst simplification pressure 💪🏽 📨 Today, EDRi and 51 civil society organisations, academics, and experts have written to the European Commission to oppose any attempts to suspend or delay the implementation and enforcement of the #ArtificialIntelligence (AI) Act. These attempts, especially in light of the growing trend of #deregulation of #FundamentalRrights and environmental protection, could undermine accountability and hard-won rights for people, the planet, justice and democracy 🚨 Instead of unraveling the EU rulebook, the Commission should focus on the full implementation and proper enforcement of its rules, like the AI Act ✊🏽 Read the open letter ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gENha32r Centre for Democracy & Technology Europe BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation Access Now, AI Forensics, Algorights, AlgorithmWatch, Amnesty International, ANEC , ARTICLE 19, Aspiration, Bits of Freedom , Citizens Network Watchdog Poland, Civil Liberties Union for Europe, COMMUNIA, Corporate Europe Observatory, Danes je nov dan, Digitalcourage, Digitale Gesellschaft, Digitale Gesellschaft e.V., epicenter.works, European Center for Not-for-Profit Law Stichting, European Civic Forum, European Disability Forum, European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), Federación de Consumidores y Usuarios CECU, Fundación Civio, Health Action International, Hermes Center Hacking for Human Rights, Intérêt à Agir, IT-Politisk Forening, Lafede, Fundacja Panoptykon, Political Watch, Politiscope, Statewatch, The Future Society, Open Future Foundation, WITNESS, 5Rights

✊🏽 We're pushing back against dangerous #GDPR deregulation ✊🏽 Today, EDRi has responded to the European Commission’s consultation on the GDPR ‘simplification’ proposal. ❌ We're firmly opposing the plan to remove documentation safeguards under Article 30(5) risks. Removing this not only weakens security, legal certainty and effective enforcement of our rights, it also opens the door to broader deregulation of the EU’s digital rulebook 🚪 🧐 The Commission is presenting this change as a way to reduce admin burdens on smaller organisations. However, there has been no impact assessment, no evidence of disproportionate burden, and this change is being carried out outside the normal procedures for revising fundamental rights legislation. It's increasingly looking more like a dangerous shortcut to pursue a simplification agenda that could weaken our #FundamentalRights 😲 The EU must defend the GDPR as the cornerstone of the EU’s digital rulebook, and push back against any attempts to undermine it. 🚨The European Commission has mass #DataRetention plans - and they're trouble🚨 Last week, the EDRi network expressed our shared concerns, massively opposing the introduction of new rules at EU level on the retention of data by service providers for law enforcement purposes. In short, we think this: ❌ constitutes #MassSurveillance, undermines the rights to #privacy,#DataProtection and other #FundamentalRights ⚖️ is contrary to the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights by the Court of Justice of the European Union ‼️ creates data security risks Read our joint civil society response ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gWc-Uy6d Chaos Computer Club e.V., La Quadrature du Net, Privacy International, Electronic Privacy Information Center, Digitale Gesellschaft, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)
