This NAIDOC Week, we reflect on the power of truth-telling and the strength of community. In February 2025, the Geographical Names Board officially assigned the name Pound Yard - a place of deep cultural and historical significance for many Aboriginal families in the Bourke Shire Council region. Located along Horsefalls Billabong off Anson Street, Pound Yard was home to several Aboriginal families, including Maureen Bates-McKay, who spent her early years at the camp. The name acknowledges the resilience of those families and the important role this place continues to play in local memory. Maureen’s words capture the spirit of this moment: “This is not about making anyone feel guilty, it’s about truth-telling. It’s about celebrating the families who lived there, how strong they were, and how far we’ve come. Our parents raised us in tin humpies, with no water, no electricity, dirt floors, and they still managed to raise good, strong children.” Assigning names like Pound Yard is one way to honour Country, acknowledge difficult histories and elevate the voices of community custodians. The Geographical Names Board is proud to play a role in this ongoing journey of recognition and reconciliation. "You’re important at work. At home you’re irreplaceable." That's the message from SafeWork NSW that DCS Spatial Services fully supports. All workers have a right to return home safe at the end of their day. Taking risks at work is not only a danger to your workers but can have a lasting impact on their families, the community and your business. An average of 52 work-related fatalities is reported to SafeWork NSW each year- that is one worker a week. And each week in NSW, over 1,000 workers compensation claims are made for serious work-related injuries and illness. These incidents can be prevented by creating workplaces where all workers and employers are aware of their work health and safety rights and responsibilities. Workplaces in NSW are required to support their workers’ physical and psychological wellbeing and keep them safe from harm and harassment. To find all you need to start a conversation about how to keep your workers safe, visit the SafeWork NSW website or call 13 10 50. Safe at work. There for them. Survey mark of the month: TS7303 Cameron Corner, located at the westernmost point of the NSW and Queensland border, is home to one of Australia's most historic survey marks. This iconic survey mark traces back to 1880 when surveyor John Cameron placed the first wooden post – right next to the famous ‘Dingo’ fence to mark the first boundary survey between New South Wales and Queensland. At a meeting of the National Mapping Council, 89 years later, it was agreed upon that this iconic survey mark would be re-established. In a collaborative effort between New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, as well as the Broken Hill Water Board, a new concrete monument was erected and unveiled in June 1969. It was officially gazetted by the NSW Geographical Names Board on 27 June 1969 as Cameron Corner. This history reminds us of the enduring importance of precise surveying in shaping our Australia’s borders and the dedication and collaboration of surveyors who continue to ensure our boundaries are accurate and enduring. The NSW Spatial Digital Twin has been given a major boost, with a $6.1 million funding allocation over 4 years - a strong endorsement of the work delivered by DCS Spatial Services and continued investment in smart, spatially enabled decision making by NSW Government. A new video exploring the Foundation Spatial Data Framework (FSDF) is now live on the : https://lnkd.in/e7MJHYvC In January, the FSDF was formally recognised as the first core State Digital Asset. This means NSW Government agencies must use FSDF spatial datasets (aligned with the themes in the Reuse Mandate), ensuring consistency and reducing duplication across government services. Learn more about this recognition here: https://lnkd.in/eSeiTVBV Accessing our authoritative data is easy, through either the SDT Explorer or Spatial Collaboration Portal. https://lnkd.in/eMqD7SgT https://lnkd.in/eMqD7SgT Watch the video and explore how spatial data is powering the digital future of NSW: https://lnkd.in/e7MJHYvC Narelle Underwood, Joshua Weston, Adrian White, Leila Dale, Peter Wood, Andrew Carfield, Vittorio Sussanna, NSW Telco Authority #NSWSpatialDigitalTwin #SurveyorGeneral #SpatialData #DigitalNSW #Geospatial #GovTech #OpenData #SmartInfrastructure

The NSW Government Innovation Showcase and Cyber Security Showcase, led by Public Sector Network Australia and held at Royal Randwick this week as part of their Government Innovation Week series, brought together senior leaders and experts from across government, industry, and academia. Highlights of the day included the Ministerial Address, delivered by Minister Jihad Dib, in which he focused on how the NSW Government is building a future-ready NSW through the NSW Digital Strategy and the five missions of accessibility, productivity, trust, resilience and digital skills; with a particular spotlight on accessibility and inclusion with the recent launch of the NSW Digital Inclusion Strategy. We also connected with Adrian White from DCS Spatial Services and Jacki Muir from ID Support NSW, who shared their thoughts on the day with us. Across the course of the two events, presenters and attendees alike shared insights, explored emerging technologies and that innovation and cyber security is not just about technology - it's also about building trust, improving lives and securing our future. #PublicSector #Innovation #CyberSecurity #DCS

DCS Spatial Services continue to improve the spatial accuracy of local government areas within the NSW Digital Cadastral Database (DCDB). A recent upgrade involved 390 land parcels at Tambar Springs in the Gunnedah Shire Council local government area being positionally improved - with a general shift of more than 10m in locality. Our team have improved the accuracy of over 1.4 million parcels across NSW within the DCDB. To learn more about why these inaccuracies exist and about the history of the NSW Spatial Cadastre, check out this article on our website: https://lnkd.in/gR2yXjkk Images: Before upgrade (white) after (yellow). #SpatialData #NSWCadastre #Upgrade #DCDB #SurveyorGeneral #Surveying
